Help FM3 won’t connect to Mac’s

Hi TimPRS66
I had a similar problem with my FM3 but it was on windows.
Mine did have a faulty USB port in the end after trying everything.
I had a repair that failed and ended up having a new unit, so far so good!
The engineer at G66.eu did send me a message regarding USB failure which may be worth you checking out.
Cheers
Tim

Hi Tim,

sorry for all the hassle.
Two units with an USB issue.
🙁

Normally these units work flawless.

Over the time we learned that - in certain circumstances (especially live situations) the USB chip can be killed
when FM3 and the computer don't use the same power sockets. Different power sockets (herby circuits) often offer different electric potential.

Two unequal potential will compensate as soon as they can. Even if they "use" a plugged USB cable. This is dangerous.

For the same reason one must not use a FM3 connected to a power stabilizer (like Furmann ) with a computer that isn't part of that circuit.
That also can kill the USB chip or and the Computer. It most likely will.

So always be sure that your computer and FM share the same circuit.

Best regards

Knut
Wait...

If using a power conditioner (many of us do to clean up power and reduce interference), computer and FM3 must both be plugged in to the same power conditioner when connecting via USB or it can fry the FM3 and/or the computer? Must have missed that part of the manual, Jesus

yeah this should really be highlighted i do have the FM3 and outboard gear into a power conditioner/AVR and computer was on same strip but not into the AVR, will change that, So wondering if this did something I did some research another member suggests powering up PC and FM3 before attaching USB and disconnect before power down. I do have one computer working right now, so reluctant to do new firmware and software re-installs etc i have a “new FM3 arriving” in a couple of weeks will see if this works on all computers

Yeah, something seems weird about that reply from G66 tech support. Especially the part about the USB cable......

Just an update - so i tried a 4th Mac and it’s working fine. I am glad i did not do re-installs of Firmware etc. So now troubleshooting the 1st Mac to see why it suddenly stopped working, Mac #2 i had not tested before, at first seemed obvious it must be the FM3, not the case, so moral is dont jump to conclusions too quickly. Despite being an experienced computer engineer i nearly jumped into changing other stuff. Thanks for all the inputs will post if i ever find whats wrong/fixes for the other Macs

Hey so I didn't read every single word but with the first mac you werent running Fractal Bot at the same time were you? That's gonna cause a communication disruption to Edit.

I realized that my older MacBook Pro that wasn’t recognizing my FM3 on 5b is on Big Sur. Works on my M1 is on Monterey. I wonder if that’s part of the problem.

Yeah i have similar suspicions, its an older iMac with High Sierra, i am trying to find and download prior version version of FM3 Edit as it got updated to 5.03. Good to know Monterey and M1 works as i need to upgrade.

I have an FM3 was working fine yesterday and now it wont connect to FM3 Edit, just says disconnected. I have tried to two different Macs, changed the USB Cable. Was advised by support to try Fractal BoT also doesnt connect.

Any suggestions? I am bummed only had it 4 weeks and i live in Asia so support is a challenge.

Wrote email to support, they gave suggestions like power off both, power on, then connect, tried all that.

Its running FW 4.01 and havent changed anything? Help 😞
I have the same issue a couple of times. In my case, Fractal-bot connects but FM3-Edit doesn't. To fix the issue...

1. Open FM3-Edit
2. Navigate to "Settings->Preferences..."
3. Under the "General" category, open the "In/Out" drop-down box and select "Fractal Audio Systems FM3"

Hope this helps...

Thanks - i did all that. Exchanged the unit and its been fine on all the computers so far 🤞, something funky in the USB it seems

My FM3 won't connect to my Mac unless I launch Edit, turn on the FM3 and then connect the USB cable to the FM3 and computer. Maybe this will work, and does anyone else experience this?

Update: Not sure how it can be the USB port. I can connect the AX8 to AX8 Editor without issue.

Just got my FM3 back from a friend. Cannot get it to connect to FM3 Edit no matter what I do. Different USB cables, system reset, try different methods of start up, etc. macOS Monterey, Version 12.6, MacBook Air M1, 2020.

Tried all the options outlined in this thread so unless anyone knows a solution, it is time to connect FAS Support.

But the FM3 and FractalBot will commute with each other.

Contact Support - they may suggest resetting the SMC on the Mac. They will also give instructions how to get to the debug screen and take a photo. Best of luck, i had 4 Macs and 2 windows , 3 worked, 3 didnt !!

Update #2: Ghost in the machine. FAS Support responded with guidance but before I could begin the step-step process today the FM3 and Editor synced immediately when turned on. Ready To Rock!

So, just had this happen with my FM9 on an older Mac. Tried Melanges fix above and initially no response (in fact the FM9 wasn't even showing as an option). Then rebooted the unit and computer and the FM9 showed up as an option, I selected, problem solved. Thanks to the community.
