Hand-made cab and 'head-like' rack for the Axe-FX

CAxN

Hey guys! So I just finished building a new 2x12 cab (it's meant to be vertical but can also go horizontal). Being an Axe-FX user, and a lover of wide stereo-type effects, I prefer two 2x12 cabs to one 4x12 so I'll also be building another to go next to it. To get a little more resonance and low end out of it (similar to a 4x12), the cab is also a bit larger and deeper than a typical 2x12, but still more mobile and lighter (a bit...heh) than a 4x12.

I've also never been a big fan of the 'rack' look for housing the Axe-Fx...so I also made a rack housing that looks a lot more like a standard amp head.

Nice Job! I think this looks amazing!

I especially like the finishing details like the white piping (a bit like my Rivera Cab) and the rounded off edges.

One teeny tiny nit picking thing I'd say is that maybe it might be a bit more ergonomic rotating your recessed handles by 180 degrees. (Putting the larger gap at the top leaves more room for your wrists in the recess....)

Thanks guys, glad you dig it!

Haha, Damien - I did actually notice that and have since swapped the handles. Good eye!

As far as how it sounds, here's a quick test clip that I took while I was hooking up the speakers.....this only had one of the two speakers hooked up and this is without the speaker baffle being screwed to the front bracing. I'd record a new one, but I've been having a hell of time getting the Art SLA2 to work correctly (it keeps going into "Protected" mode any time I touch the strings on my guitar (ugh). For those debating whether or not to get the ART SLA2 or a cheaper power amp...DON'T DO IT! Hahaha.

So does that mean you'd typically run Cabinet Modeling in "bypass"?

You know, I would have thought so, but in the short amount of time the my ART SLA2 was working, I A/B'd it with modeling on/off and for whatever reason I preferred the sound of it with the global cab sim on. It was only on one patch though, so it could have just been that one patch that I thought sounded better with it on.

My ART amp had the same issue... ended up changing the jacks on the cab, and re-soldering the speaker cables... works fine now. I think its a short\loose connection, which works fine when used with a standard guitar amp, but the ART has some kind of sensitivity to weak connections.

Thanks Chris, that's interesting....and you may be right, I did run my Orange head through it no problem. After doing some research (before building the cab), I wound up going with 12 gauge speaker wire because it's higher quality/thicker, but the wire just barely fit through the speaker tab holes. I may re-wire with a slightly smaller gauge so that it grabs on better. Thanks! I must say, regardless of the cause of the issue, it doesn't give me the warm and fuzzies gigging with that ART. Hmmmm. Does anyone know if the Matrix poweramps have the same 'protected' "feature"?
