When I decided to uses scenes I settled on two scenes that are always dedicated for lead. With the MMGT22 I used two scenes for clean, two for crunch and two for lead. Usually a short delay and a longer delay or more ambient sound separated scene 5 from 6. I found that covered 98% of the territory for me. I got in the habit of programming from a template preset so it was an automatic feature that I didn't have to think about with the output volume unless it needed to be tweaked.
Should have the III in hand next week to see what works for me. The XL's won't leave until I have a gig-able solution with regard to midi control but I'm looking forward to the process of getting it set up. At least right now... I do get tweak weary pretty quickly. Looks like a lot to experiment with in the III so analyses paralysis will no doubt be real and have to somehow be avoided.
