FR 12 Speaker or Horn Upgrade

Are there differences between the cut on the V2 vs the V3?
The cut on the V2 is a 4th eq filter stage that only reduces the higher frequencies. It works much like the stock preamps cut control.

The new cut control on the V3 works differently. It is not an eq filter, but instead a level control for the horn. It is a much more efficient way to accomplish the same thing.

The V3 cut will also allow you to turn the horn off completely at full rotation.

I like that idea. Sounds like a good match for the horn upgrade.

The horn finally arrived and none of the hardware stores near me have a crimp spade disconnect that fits the smaller size on the FR connecting wires. My disappointment is immeasurable. I really glossed over that part of the thread. Don't make my mistake.

Ouch... I chopped off those itty bitty spade tips and happen to keep a thousand pounds of electrical connectors around here due to my electrical engineering background (retired-glorified technician). Sorry you got hosed!

Can you not just solder the wire to the connection point? Sorry, I haven't opened mine yet and looked at them due to some big projects that came up at work this week. It's on my list to do this weekend. New compression driver and horn.

You probably could but the wire is already a bit on the short side. I pulled it off just removing the screws, I didn't even know what was going to be back there and a wire fell down was the first thing.

What's that little white connector at the end called? The part that looks like something you plug into a computer. If I can get one of those I might just replace the whole wire instead of extending the existing one with an adapter wire.

Take a pair of bigger ones and sand or file them down to fit with a dremel or hand held file. That is what I did to make the short adapter wire I used.

I think the white connector at the end is a Jst Xh 2.54 2 pin female connector? Maybe WKSmith can weigh in on that?

Yep. The FRs use JST (Japan solderless terminal connectors) with a 2.54 pitch.

JST XH 2.54 is the common Chinese version.

You can easily find those harnesses on amazeballs

Oh, weird. Those are not just usual speaker terminals that you could easily solder the wire to or use a connector. I didn't realize they used a pre-wired harness connector. Looks like what a computer fan uses, lol. You know, it might help if I opened the box sometime :D I was on vacation all last week when they arrived. Then work was hectic this week and they've been sitting in my guitar room. It's on my list to do today. Might have to wait until tomorrow, but at least "amazeballs", lol, can send them to me overnight by 4-8am!

Which one of these do I need?

I ended up chopping the old cord instead of making a brand new one. I wanted to get it in and try already. My first impression was woah definitely too much treble. It's not painful but it feels like instant ear fatigue. I will wait for a V3 before I decide to put the old one back in. In the meantime I'm still experimenting with it like this. I have managed to get it more comfortable running the treble and cut down a bit but I have to speculate that's not as good as independent control of the horn.

By the way I stripped one of the horn screws putting it back in. Does anyone know what type of screw I'm looking for to replace it?

update: It works without issue. I can't run the EQ as high as I did with the stock horn before it starts to bother my ears. I also don't know why you would want to do that if you don't have to. This was my experience with the stock preamp. After upgrading to the v3 the EQ sweet spots change again.

I have an extra Celestion horn and throat upgrade that I don’t need. If anyone needs it, I will send for free because I can’t use it. Just send me a direct message. First come, first serve. U.S. shipping only.
