It really is just a starting point, though. I got kind of use to just slapping that PEQ in to most of my patches with that particular guitar. It always helped. But, it can always get better. If, I take a second to adjust the 250/800/1550 Hz levels for each situation. The last big notch may not even be necessary for each guitar/patch combination. Or, it might be different. The 250/800/1550 Hz locations are good -- but not written in stone. I do move the 1550 Hz around fairly often. It also helps to bypass the PEQ, from time to time, and reconsider what is being cut out.

In addition to the aforementioned coil split, if you have a four wire hookup on the pup, try parallel connection instead of the typical series. It's still noise cancelling, but brighter than HB.

might try playing with the height of the pole pieces and pickup mount too?
