FM3 Output 2 to In ears caused continual buzzing

Hello all!

So I played by first gig with the FM3 on the weekend and it sounded great, the set up was as follows:

  • Output 1
    • Straight to FOH (Mono)
      • Mode = Copy L->R
      • Output Level = -10 dBV
      • Phase = Normal
  • Output 2
    • 1/4 Guitar cable (Vandamme pro 10m unbalanced) into Behringer xAir XR18
      • Mode = Copy L->R
      • Output Level = -10 dBV
      • Phase = Normal
      • Output Type = Line Level
      • Output 2 Copy = Output 1
Output 2 set up this way worked... but there was a continual buzz coming back through the in ear monitors like somebody had turned an amps gain up to 11. Output 1 to FOH was perfect, the sound engineer was super happy with how easy everything was.

I solved this with a temp fix by plugging my output 1 right stereo output via XLR, into the xAir which sent my FOH signal to the in ears but then everyone had to adjust my guitar as the levels were set for FOH already. Where as ideally id prefer it on a separate output.

So what's the issue here? Do I need balanced 1/4 Jack cable? Humbuster cable? what have I missed?

I'm very much an FM3 noob.

Cheers for your time!

Hello,
I would try another 1/4 cable first. I had such weird behaviors using guitar cables in the past for fx loops...
Otherwise, I would connect the cable from out2 to in2 (fx send / return) and connect in2 to out1 in the grid, and check out1 again (or with headphones).
A Humbuster could indeed help in case of a long distance and/or noisy environment.
Good luck!

Welcome aboard ... plenty of people here will help you ... :)

Try a different cable in Out 2 (and then try another one) - it is often, but not always, the lead!

Try putting an actual Out 2 block in the Preset, at the end of the signal chain, and turn Output 2 Copy off.

Check the Ground Lift switch.

Have you set the power frequency to the correct setting for your country?

Experiment with SUM L>R vs Copy L>R - both have their pros and cons.

Was you cable in the L socket or the R one? Try the other one?

thank you for the responses so far I tried the different cables, I had two and both had the same issue and the ground lift didn't make a difference and tried both outputs with the same problem, I need a long run cable so distance could have had something to do with it.

However, I will try some of the the other suggestions for sure, I have next practice in a week or so and ill annoy my band mates by trying a few different fixes so to speak. This is the kind of thing I need, different avenues to explore, thank you!

If it’s a ground loop (which is quite possible) try a humbuster cable or use a device (like a DI) with transformer isolation between the unbalanced output and the input to the IEM mixer.

OP: Did you ever solve the issue? I was going to suggest setting the ouput level from -10 dBV to +4 dBV.
