Firmware history for the III.

Hey all,

Full disclosure: I don't own a III (yet) and am still thrilled with my II-XL. I tend to prefer to "jump in" when the platform has reached maturity and firmware updates have somewhat stabilized. I rely heavily on my presets remaining fairly consistent, yet of course I like to take advantage of the newer features and improvements (particularly when Cliff has yet another epiphany). So, for me, it's easier to jump in later in the game, after a good bunch of the epiphanies have already happened.

By now, the III has been around for a while, so maybe it's time for me to get into the game. But I still see a lot of new f/w releases, though I have no idea if they fundamentally change the tone (or if we're talking diminishing returns at this point).

I tried searching for a history of fw releases, but the search terms are too common and I didn't find any straight answer.

Insight?
Anyone else a late adopter?

Look at this latest fw release. All fw's are included in each new RN document with all notes on every release. Then you can go to forum and find the fractaliers responses to the always amazing updates by Cliff.

Also, Cliff doesn't do anything half ass. All updates are amazing and always make such a difference. He constantly improves on every effect, constantly updating algorithms for amps, and everything else. Always adding new effects. Improving midi, midi clock etc.
He's the consummate professional and a perfectionist. NOBODY is as good as he is with his craft.

THe new releases dont change the tone, they only make them better. If you like your 2, you will love the 3. At this point, I cant image going back to the 2 ,that is how much I love the 3.

Good thinking! I'm just as clever as you, but I lack your discipline... ;)

The history is also in the wiki.

I'm sure that I have missed a few here but there's 180+ updates in my firmware folder not counting cabs, usb and other updates. Some of these were so packed with features and improvements that it was like getting a new piece of hardware for free. Name one other company that gives this much to their customers for free? Zero... but a few have attempted to copy the FAS model.

There are definitely more, this collection started in 2019 after a new hard drive install. I have the others around somewhere. I know... I'm a digital packrat

Can't remember when I started with the 3, but it was awhile ago, and quite a few FW updates ago - but one thing that I've found is that I haven't really had to tweak my presets a lot - I still check them and OCCASIONALLY have had to make a few adjustments, but for the most part, they just end up sounding better without me doing really anything. That being said - for my live stuff I use about 8-10 presets - like 2 main ones and the others that are some variation of them that cater to specific songs. That's my experience with the FW updates.

True... But filtering out beta releases is a more realistic number because official releases "absorb" those.

It's been about 6 years since I migrated from the Axe FX II and I had to re-dial things in back then. Expect that your Axe FX2 presets will need to be re-dialed in, and expect that it will be worth it.
