External switch for tap tempo?

Has anyone successfully gotten an external switch to work for tap tempo on an MFC-101?

I have a momentary switch and I changed the setup to "momentary" and the MIDI to CC14 / hardware (also tried auto).

The switch affects the tempo setting but the tempo doesn't match the timing that gets tapped in. Any clues?
 
When I was setting up my Mission pedal switch, I had to go into the midi menu on the MFC and assign a CC# to the switch (which was plugged into switch 1-2 on the MFC), then I chose that # on the midi set-up menu on the Axe.

Don't know if this helps or not.
