Do Les Paul-ish guitars make you play old school?

Probably something to it psychologically -to have a guitar in hand that "represents" the music, in addition to whatever technical aspects apply.

Absolutely. Add to that, I stopped buying guitars for versatility and started going for their specific/stereotypical sounds. One of my partscasters is really close, spec-wise, to a 50ā€™s Strat, while I can crank up the distortion and get plenty of hard rock sounds out of it, nothing about that guitar screams ā€œPlay hard rock/metal on meā€, itā€™s more like ā€œSlow down and appreciate these wonderful tones via sustained notesā€¦.except for your little shitty EJ runs you try to throw in thereā€ :tearsofjoy:
