Dizzy V4 Silver

I'm one of those guys who just sticks to the same amps for years. I rarely wander off my small handful of marshall-esque models but last night Ventured over to the Dizzy V4 Silver 2 and 3. It somehow felt more alive to me....perhaps the new FW? not sure. I also threw on a klon in front of the Silver 2 and was pleasantly surprised! There is something really pleasant in the low end and I could see this as a great layering amp in recording for some heavy rhythm chords. I should really venture out more to other models. I'm such a creature of habit.

There was a post awhile back on a Tool preset I'll have to revisit. I think the new FW has brought some models more alive

Silver 2 is pretty much what I would recommended in all future "suggest a marshall-esque amp" threads.
It is THE Marshall to me now. Well, other than stock JTM45.

Probably a very basic and noob kind of question here, but for someone who understands the basics of amps (kinda - I've never actually owned an actual amps; the last thing I had was a Boss GT-6 a couple of decades ago) , what is or how do the options differ with any amp. Using the Dizzy (which I love), there are Blue 2-4 and Silver 2-4. From what I can see, they're all variants of the same amp. What is the difference? Why are there 6 variants of the same amp (or are they actually totally different physical amps)? And why is there no Blue/Silver 1?

Blue = original Diezel VH4's ("blue face")... probably most famous for old Tool albums.
Silver = later silver face models. Hetfield used one in a dual amp setup. So did a lot of other dudes.

Blues were known for being a little darker and more saturated. Silvers are EXTREMELY tight & dry. Both have stupid amounts of gain on tap.

2-4 = various channels (they're both 4ch heads).
2 covers light breakup (almost clean) into AC/DC territory unboosted.
3 is the "Mega" channel that was recording secret sauce throughout most of the late 90's-00's. It's... BIG.
4 is a highly compressed liquid lead channel. Reminds me a lot of Mesa Mk IV with a different flavor. This is what Neal Schon used.

1 is the most piano-like absolutely clean cleans you've ever heard. Extremely punchy & awesome, and I also wonder why it was left off.

...I ran a silverface VH4 for about a decade in the mid/early '00's.

I plan to spend some more time on this model and will just create a whole new preset i think with the different channels. I can see why this model was used on lots of recordings...it is BIG

^ I've been thinking about doing the same. I've just been on such a SLO kick for a while.

Part of the problem though is figuring out what else to use to nail ch1.

I'm thinking a fender twin with some tweaking would do it pretty well... or maybe the jazz chorus (also heavily "modded"). Maybe even the Dumble clean. The hard part is going to get that channel-to-channel consistency... really making it sound & feel like it's coming from the same amp. I might try just using the Dizzy ch2 with really low gain and messing with the tone stack.

From the VH4 manual:

"The tone reminds of a cross between a Twin and a Hiwatt 100, but with better overall dynamic response."

These threads are great for trying new amps because I just stick with a few. So I tried the Dizzy Silver 2 and I like it. Very smooth distortion with some sizzle and a soft bottom that sounds nice without being tubby. Think it's a keeper.

Agreed. Sometimes overwhelmed with so many amp choices and in various threads its all mixed in there with what people like. I like singular threads that highlight a model and have a discussion around it. Like the older Yek's Fractal Audio Amp Models threads. Not to say those threads are out dated by any means but the FW is always evolving. I'd like to see more threads like that ...for example, some users who are awesome at the EOB kind of tones (not my forte) can share some tips /settings on a particular amp/cab combo. These exist on Youtube on some of Leon's vids or say Burgs, Cooper etc . would be handy to have that more here .

Ok, took a stab at this... just my take on what I'd want from an "all Diezel" preset... YMMV.

Running FW27 (not Beta).

I used a template layout, so some of the block levels may seem off as you dig through. In most cases you can easily remove a certain block and compensate elsewhere.

Since it's a template, there's surprises hiding behind control switches 2 & 3. I suggest setting them to momentary switches or turning off entirely... unless you're feeling brave.

To get Diezel cleans I just used Herbert 2- and turned the gain way down. 🤷‍♂️ Turned out ok IMO.
