Default tonestack list

Power User
Maybe I am just not able to use the search function as I sometimes point out to others....

but I was wondering if there somewhere is a list of which default tonestacks are used for each amp model?

F.ex vintage tonestack goes with which amp model?

Jens

Not sure I completely understand your question, but each amp modeled uses the original tonestack to the best of my knowledge. But it must always be remembered that settings on actual amplifier knobs do NOT correlate to knobs on the Axe virtual amplifiers .... Axe-FX II is better with ears rather than eyes!!!

I am not so sure that they all use the original tonestack, f.ex what is the tonestack of the jcm 800? is it plexi?. Which amp uses the vintage tonestack? which tonestack for the friedman or the bassman.
They don't appear in the list, so I expect that an identical or at least similar tonestack was used. All I want to know is what goes where? :)

For the rest I guess I can never be reminded enough that I should use my ears not my eyes when I am making a patch but I don't see what it has to do with my question... ;)

im not so sure thats a correct assumption, the selectable tonestack mods wouldnt be the only tonestacks in the system, those are just a shortened list of stacks that they chose, it probably takes up data having those modifiable tone stacks and so they cut down the list to 15 or so. the jcm 800 would have been modelled on a real life 800

You can use 2 amp blocks plus the enhancer to find which tonestack matches the default. Place amps in parallel, send the same guitar or synth signal to them, pan them L/R, run both into enhancer, center both channels & invert one w/ width at 0%. Set both amps the same way (i.e. just change type w/ tone controls at defaults) then swap tonestacks in one amp. Whatever cancels to silence is likely the same as the passive tonestack. Brit 800 = Plexi tonestack.

Bakerman: Thanks! That makes a lot of sense of course :) You're the unsung hero of problem-solving around here!

So I spend 45 minutes going through the amps, and here are my results and the patch I used.

I think that you'll find quite a few surprises and one match that I re-did a few times to check if I did not make a mistake....

The patch I made is set to the Mr Z amp.

Feel free to check a few, most of them I just ran through so I might have messed one up...

Ooo... some good work here!

Not sure I fully understand it to be honest, but it looks like something I'll delve further into!

Thanks!

Maybe this helps?:

I was trying to check out the tonestack parameter in Amp Geek page in the amp block. It has passive as default value for all amps, and you can change to one of the available other tonestacks.

But the number of tonestack types is much smaller than the number of amps so some amps must be using the same tonestacks (that is logical and also true for a lot of tube amps AFAIK anyway...)

So since it only says passive you can't see which amp has which default tonestack and I was always curious about what went where (I am like that! ;) and it was not always obvious from the name
of the tonestack) Hence this thread and Bakermans brilliant idea for comparing tonestacks in an easy way.

It reveals some interesting and surprising results since f.ex there is no amp using the Dr Z tonestack and 2 of the 3 dumble models have plexi tonestacks and not the skyline tonestack.

Yeah thanks! I thought that was wierd too, but I never used that amp..

The other one that really baffled me was the Dr Z? :)

I actually had the rest but the must have gotten lost in the copy/paste

Thanks for the help! :)

Thanks for doing the grunt work and posting the results. I experimented with using the Skyline tonestack with the HAD and liked it better than the default.

yeah weird DR Z.. you'd think it would have its own tonestack..

Very surprising :) But didn't that amp get reworked in one of the updates maybe it changed then? The two tonestacks sound sort of similar I guess?

Jens

So maybe I have pseudo science tweaker OCD? But I thought it would make more sense to add the tonestack freq, position and presence frequency to the list when using it as a reference.

wow!that's a lot of work you did there.
the way i understood it though, each amp in it's "passive" tonestack was it's default tonestack.the list of alternate tonestacks was for experimentation purposes.i remember reading about the Dumble amps that the skyline tonestack was a modification by dumble themselves, not standard on their amps until later models.
but maybe your on to something,i don't know.sounds like a question for Cliff.

Well to me the result is more some info so that you know what options you have. I did indeed think that the dumbles all used the skyline tonestack, but now we know that you can choose that option too. And maybe we also know that the tonestack on the overdrive channel is similar to a plexi, so that might be something to try too when making patches. That's to me very useful when trying to combine tonestacks and amps.

In the end I have no real idea how a real dumble sounds and reacts since I never played one.
