(I started this thread as a question. Now that I know the answers, I'd like to share them in case they're useful to someone else).
The below wiring diagram shows how to make a signal chain between the Apollo 8 interface and your Axe FX III using Apollo Console and Axe Edit in realtime.
This scheme enables you to send Axe OUT 4 to the Line 3+4, so you can use Unison enabled UAD plugins. Further, you can use the Axe as an effect loop through Apollo IN 7+8 to Apollo OUT 7+8 using Axe IN/OUT 3.
My reason for doing this was just for fun. The Axe is superior on guitar sounds anyways. As the Axe comes with awesome USB INs & OUTs - using a DAW would pretty much enable a similar workflow. For my part, this is just experimental.
