Connecting the Axe-Fax to Echo Soundcard and active monitors

I managed to record using 1 xlr ( microphone cables?) from the axe out to the soundcard ( Univers. 1 In)
Then to 1/4 jacks cables from soundcard to monitors.
Firewire from soundcard to pc and y cable xlr jack ( 1/4 mini) to both monitors.

Something wasn`t right and I guess I have the wrong cables from axe to soundcard? Any solution?
The signal was lower and more distant than when I run cables directly from Axe to monitors. And the guitar tones were also different.
The soundcard echo 4, has a preamp. Has that anything to do with it?

How do I know what 1/4 jacks are balanced and which are not?

You could try running 2 cables stereo to the soundcard.
