on the manual it is a little. vage how many other units u can plug in. like preamps and high end compressors. is it just one, it has 4 inputs can it be 4 preamps 4 compressors or whatever?

You could plug a preamp and a high-(or low) end compressor in, in series. You could also use an EQ in that series.

What are you trying to achieve?

I would assume that if one has a collection of high end outboard gear one would also have a decent patch bay for said collection, in which case, combined with the flexible I/o of the III a near limitless variety of signal chains could be achieved

Then again, the III has such good compressors, preamps, emulated channel strips etc that I can see much need for outboard gear.....

As Chris said, there are 4 inputs. If you mean as a loop, then you'll lose one input for your source signal. It's pretty straightforward, so don't let the options overwhelm you. Beautifully simple, but a powerful upgrade!

well as it is right now i have units like these;
piranha preamp
triaxis preamp
BBE 386 acoustic preamp
and assorted rocktron effects, some custom made enhancers as well.
it is all controlled by a rocktron loop 8. that turn units off and on in the signal chain.
so i am assuming when i get the III i would like to keep some preamps 3 and a
