capturing sysex dump

How does this work? I assume windows won't spot midi data coming in and prompt to save it. So I have to use an app? Does axeedit backup mfc101? Does it just require a single midi cable from mfc midi out to computer midi-in?
 
Ok, so now trying to update firmware to .19 with the same app...

It says %0 completed and just stays there long after I send all the data so I repower the unit. It now comes up "error 14" on reboot. I'll assume the firmware didn't take.

Looking at the release notes it says the sysex dumps of the old firmwares are buggy. Did I just loose all my settings?
 
OK, so Bome's isn't so good at sending the firmware for me. BUt MidiOx seemes to work. So I figure why not get a new backup with midiOX with the new firmware, but after the dump using MidiOX manual sysEX receive function it continues to receive 2 bytes of data continuosly after the dump?
