BUG with compressor block in 28.00

Edit: Fixed in 28.01

I already deleted 28.00 and re-installed 27.03, so no preset to share, but here is the issue and how to re-create it.
The issue happened on any preset with a compressor block. It happened on several different presets.

Here is the steps I took:

Install 28.00 firmware.

Select the compressor block.

Start auditioning the new compressor blocks one at a time from the top one going down.

When you get to dyna-comp classic the audio cuts off completely. I looked at the Axe FXIII and all of the meters were locked on, full up. Selecting a different compressor does not help. I had to turn the Axe FXIII off and back on.

I tried it again after turning the Axe FXIII back on. The exact same thing happened when I followed the same procedures. When I got dyna-comp classic the audio cut off completely, and all of the meters were locked on, full up.

I tried this three times and got the same results every time before giving up and re-installing 27.03.

I re-installed 27.03 and everything works fine on any preset I select. No lock ups. I left the new Axe Edit 1.14.11 installed, and it seems to be working fine with 27.03, So I don't think it's Axe Edit.

What is your CPU use?

And before Cliff posts the link again for proper bug reports, attach a preset that's as simplified as possible the demonstrates the behavior.

I've been messing with the new compressors a lot, especially the Dynamicomp Classic and I've had no issues so far.

The CPU was at 81.8.

The last time I turned the Axe FXIII off and back on, I deleted 4 blocks on the preset and got it down to 70 CPU and saved it. I was trying to rule out CPU possibly being too high. I then tried it again and got the same results. When I got to dyna-comp classic It locked up with the LEDS full up and no sound again.

I never got to try any of the compressors below the dyna-comp classic.

When I re-installed 27.03 the preset was empty because I'd saved it on 28.00 and did not do a backup beforehand.
I do not have the preset that the issue occurred on any more, so I can not post it.

Same Issue here with the dyna comp classic Will check CPU tomorrow but I don't think it's anywhere near high. Axe locked out and had to reboot.

My compressor block was set on optical compressor when I was on 27.03 and there was no CPU warnings.
On 28.00 changing through the different types of compressors locked it up when I got to dyna-comp classic.
Has the CPU drastically increased for the new updated compressors in 28.00?

  • New Dynami-Comp algorithm:
    • New algorithm accurately models various nonlinearities for faithful reproduction.
    • Added Knee Type to allow varying the knee shape.
    • Added Tone control (like in various clones).
    • Added Drive control. The Drive control allows overdriving the OTA which can be used to add saturation. The control is preset when selecting one of the Dynami-Comp types but can be altered by the user.
    • Added Input/Output graph.
    • A low-CPU version of this algorithm is available with the Econo-Dyno-Comp.

Good to know but the Dyna Comp would probably not be my compressor of choice. I've been using the Optical Compressor or the FET mostly. I was trying out all of the different compressor choices going from the top one down, to see which one I liked the best. Everyone was so excited about the new compressors I wanted to try them all out, but
I never got to try any of the compressors below the dyna-comp classic because it would lock up.

I'd still like to know if the CPU drastically increased for the new updated compressors in 28.00?

The CPU use did increase. That's why there's an economy version of that model...

I don't have specific numbers but the Dynamicomp models seem to be the most CPU intensive.

I just went to an empty preset and re-installed 28.00.

Then I put in only a compressor block and tested to see what the CPU for each compressor type was. I was able to change through all the compressors without it locking up. Here are the results:

Analog Compressor = 9.1
Analog Sustainer = 9.2
Classic VCA Compressor = 9.9
Compander = 10.5
Dynami-Comp Classic = 11.0
Dynami-Comp Modern - 11.0
Dynami-Comp Soft = 11.0
Dynamics Processor = 9.0
Econo-Dyno-Comp = 9.2
JFET Pedal Compressor = 9.5
JFET Studio Compressor = 10.7
Modern VCA Compressor = 10.0
Optical Compressor = 12.4
Rockguy Compressor = 9.5
Vari-Mu Tube Compressor = 9.2
VCA Bus Compressor = 10.6
VCA FB Sustainer = 10.6
VCA FF Sustainer = 10.6

I then created a block of my 4 favourite compressors and saved it to my blocks library.

I then started going through my presets. I had all of them set to Optical Compressor. I overwrote my old compressor blocks with the new one.

The CPU warning light was on about 1/10 of them and I had to delete a block or two in all those presets.

I did not try and audition all the compressor blocks in a full preset at all this time, so I don't know if it would still lock up when I get to Dynami-Comp Classic still or not, and I am not going to try it any more.

Everything seems to be working fine now, so that implies it was either a bad install, or more likely too high CPU from the new compressors. Even though the CPU warning light was not on when it locked up before, I think the extra CPU that the new compressors added was the issue.

So the issue seems to be solved for me anyway. It sounds really good!
