Every now & then, I help Ken Lawrence cut inlay.
Here is some of the Mother of Pearl used on the last sets. It's very impressive quality.
I cut some test logos for him at one point back in 2017. He had just started making James Hetfield the guitar made from Metallica's old practice shed at the time.
I was trying different materials such as copper & silver from old coins. I told Ken that it would be really cool to cut a logo for James from a coin of his birthday year.
Ken thought that was a great idea. He mentioned that to James & from there the idea blossomed to have the four coins carved for the back of his guitar.
Each coin represented a band member & their corresponding year of birth. Here's a link to the fellow who cut those coins:
It's awesome how a simple idea can manifest into greatness.
