Honestly, anything could be considered overkill for bedroom playing. A 50-watt or 100-watt amp is overkill for a bedroom too. Plug-ins have just as many features, if not more, than anything mentioned. Just find the gear that provides inspiration...overkill or not. I probably only use a tenth of the features the Axe III provides but I love the way it sounds and feels. I don't consider it overkill at all. Best of luck!

Axe 3 + good monitors + DAW and you have the ultimate bedroom rig.
