Axe-Fx III as Interface - Controlling Volume - Used to My Interface - Suggestions?

You would send the DI track back to the Axe III via its USB Inputs 5&6, record the processed result via USB Outputs 1&2, monitor the Axe III's output via live monitoring the SPDIF Input on your Audient and monitor the DAW playback via the main outs on your Audient.

If you didn't use SPDIF, you could also monitor the Axe III's output via analog connections from the Output 1 jacks to your Audient and live monitor those inputs.

To live record the Axe III, you'd plug your guitar into its Instrument input and record the DI from USB Output 5 or 6 and record the processed output via USB Outputs 1&2. Daw playback monitoring would still go to the main outs of the Audient.
I’m going to experiment with this.

I sincerely appreciate all the support and patience from everyone.

I’ll keep you posted!

monitor the DAW playback via the main outs on your Audient.
Or just send to the Axe on USB channels 1/2, avoiding the need for an aggregate device. The playback and processed signals will be combined at SPDIF out just like if you were listening to headphones or Out 1 with only the Axe-FX in use.

In my DAW, would I have Axe-FX as Input Device and my interface (Audient) as the Output Device?
I' not seeing how to utilize SPDIF.

I'm embarrassed to say this, but I pretty much need my hand held to accomplish this.

i.e. set this to this, then this to this, etc.

Do you have a S/PDIF optical to coax converter? The Axe III has coaxial (RCA) connectors for S/PDIF and your iD14 only has optical, so you'll need a converter. If you don't have one you can also use analog cables (XLR or 1/4") from the Axe III's Output 1 L&R jacks to the iD14's two analog inputs in place of S/PDIF for monitoring as well.

Do you ever record more than one instrument at a time? If so, using SPDIF for monitoring would free up the analog inputs for other mics or instruments if needed. If not, analog monitoring through the iD14 will work fine too.

Yes, I do have a converter.

I don't typically record more than one instrument at a time but I would prefer to leave my mics connected to the interface vs unplugging when needed.

Ok. Connect the Axe III's SPDIF out to the Audient's SPDIF in via the converter and turn up the SPDIF Input monitoring slider in your monitor mix in the Audient's mixer. Set the Audient's optical input to SPDIF instead of ADAT. The Axe III will have to be the clock master since your Audient doesn't have SPDIF Output.

In the I/O menu on the Axe III set up the Digital I/O like this:

You should then be able to plug your guitar into the Axe III and hear its output through your monitors or headphones connected to the Audient if those are turned up.

In Logic, set the Axe III as your input and output device and you should be good to go for recording or reamping on it.

The manual outlines the different USB channels:

For reamping, record the guitar DI via USB Input 5 or 6 (mono is fine since they are both the same signal). You can then change Input 1 Source in the Axe III's I/O menu to Digital and then send the DI track back to the Axe III for reamping by changing that tracks output from Stereo Out to USB Outputs 5&6 in Logic. Make sure you send it back to both channels so the grid level is correct.

When you want to record your Audient's inputs, switch the input device in Logic to it instead. The output device can stay set to the Axe III since the monitoring feed will loop back to the Audient via SPDIF.

Can’t wait to get home to try this.
Thanks so much for the instruction!

I've gotten this to work up to the point of recording the DI track being played back through the Axe. I haven't been able to get the reamped signal back into Logic.

Arm the track you are recording the wet output to and hit record, not play. No need to solo the DI track. It should be the only one going to USB outputs 5&6. The rest of the tracks should go to Stereo Out for monitoring so you can reamp in the context of the whole mix.

OK, it's working now. I think I didn't have the Axe set as input and output device.
