yes, the fingers are very important, which i'm still improving when i have time from work... slowly, very slowly... 
gain is another thing. i need to get used to using lower gain. at the first glance it sounds like the more is the better, but it is not (while typing that, i'm still using using the fryette deliverance m with input at 7, overdrive at 8, hahaa)
another thing that i discovered, extreme treble makes the mix more muddy somehow, i don't understand how, but i think it does. i'm leaning more on mids while i play more instead of treble.
is it possible for us to learn the impulse (or the mix recipe) that you use with the evh 5153?
