AXE FX 3 and SPDIF OUT to Scarlett 6i6 using Abelton 12 Live - Confused - SOLVED

Getting back into basic recording of a few tracks.
As title says just trying to do simple recording of AXE SPDIF into my Scarlett 6i6 SPDIF In using Abelton Live 12.

I can get a source signal in Abelton when Monitoring is on on AUTO and the EXT IN is Input 5 for the Scarlett.

After that it is a mess for me. I used to be able to use the SPDIF OUT into the Scarlett before with AXE FX 2 and previous versions of Abelton.

1) Not sure if I have the Axe 3 configured correctly.
2) Not sure if I have the Scarlett configured correctly in Focusrite Control. (Really confusing)

3) Note sure how about settings in Abelton (the SPDIF is supposed to be Audio From using Output 5 I believe per Scarlett manual).
4) Not sure at what setting to use for Audio To in Abelton.
5) Not sure about Monitor setting (Signal is greyed out when OFF and Green when on Auto)

I do get a dry signal recorded sometimes. Have no clue why.

Here is what settings look like.

Any guidance is appreciated.

I can get a recording when using the AXE FX 3 as a soundcard through trial and error.
I would prefer to use the AXE SPDIF OUT to Scarlett SPDIF IN.

Thanks.

You should also change the Hardware Inputs for SPDIF to 1+2. It looks like it is just set to 1 which will only give you the left channel instead of stereo. The outputs look like they are set to 1+2.

Edit: For clarification, this is referencing screenshot two for Focusrite Control.

I made a proper screenshot of the Abelton grid. :D

Thanks for the replies. Will give these changes a try and report back. 👍

OK...

1) Switched the SPDIF Out Source on AXE 3 to Output 1
2) Changed the Hardware Inputs in Focusrite Control to 1+2.
3) I have MONITOR in Ableton set to AUTO.

Armed the track and it looks like the signal is getting to Scarlett from the AXE 3. (see screenshot below)

It will not record at all though no matter what EXT IN that I choose in Abelton.
Is there some other setting in the AXE 3 that I have wrong?

Note- I also can no longer get it to record using the AXE 3 as soundcard.

Here is interesting info.

In Sonar Platinum I can get the AXE 3 to record via the AXE 3 soundcard alone, and also with the Scarlett as soundcard using the SPDIF IN from AXE 3.

It worked easily with no issues at all.

This appears to be an Abelton setup issue.
I will do some more research.

Glad you're making progress. First thing that comes to mind is the track shows Main Out as the output in the Abelton screenshot. Do you have the Focusrite selected as the device for the Main Out with the correct output (I assume output 1+2 on the Focusrite) ? I'm assuming your monitors are connected to the Focusrite and not the Axe.

Thanks for reply.

I have tried every possible output for AUDIO TO using the default MAIN you note above, and the EXT OUT drop down. (see below).

Every output listed which are all activated in ABELTON Sound preferences shows that it is receiving the sound output from the AXE 3 in when armed.

It will just not record in any of them. Same behavior using the AXE FX 3 as soundcard.
Kind of making me crazy. I am sure it user error.

Oh, and the Scarlett goes into a Mackie Mixer out to a pair of monitors and also headphones.
Works great normally.

OK, have it working with the AXE FX3 as soundcard. (AUDIO 3 track)

And in now works with AX3 SPDIF Out to Scarlett SPDIF In. (Audio 4 Track)

You can see the tracks and EXT In and EXT OUT settings on each one in screenshot.

Have tried these settings before but had it in Session View where you could not see the track evidence of recording.

I switched VIEWS from Session View to Arrangement View which showed tracks I was actually recording. (see below screenshot)
You could then unmute a take and it would play.

Not intuitive, but I had not worked in LIVE for a few years. As I thought - user error.

Thanks for all of your help.
