Anyone use real stomp boxes in front of the Axe-Fx?

I have been using some stomp boxes in front of the Axe-Fx and wondering how I need to adjust levels to avoid the levels going into the red constantly? Is that something I adjust on the Axe-Fx or the actual pedals?

Set each pedal for desired level change (if any) between off & on. Adjust Axe-FX input level while highest-output-level pedal combination (that you plan to actually use) is active.
