Anyone here playing Rush covers?

I've always been very intimidated by Rush. Love their stuff but wouldn't dare tackle a cover. This has now changed and we're doing Subdivisions. What a load of fun, especially with the various time signatures.

This makes me want to rise to the challenge and do one more. Anyone here have a great suggestion for a moderately good / ok-ish guitarist to tackle more Rush material?

We warm up with Limelight… all goes pretty well until we get to the solo part LOL.

It’s not just the notes or the ‘tone’, it’s the musical timing and the player’s feel.

Sometimes we get the timing right and surprise ourselves.

It’s a good song to work on keeping the rhythm section tight that’s for sure. Lots of rhythmical challenges in their music.

Definitely agree with Limelight, Red Barchetta and Jacob's Ladder.

If you're looking to challenge yourself with more songs with changing time signatures, add to that: The Trees (the middle section and solo in 5/4 is one of my favorites) and Circumstances (again, love the arpeggio interlude alternating from 5/8 to 3/4). There are so many!

Our band did Subdivisions, which is great fun, along with Countdown (more time changes in the outro) and Distant Early Warning (mostly 4/4 with some 7/4 and 6/4 parts).

If you really want to dig in, the "Rush - The Complete Scores" book published by Hal Leonard is marvelous. It's got full guitar, bass, drum, keys, and vocal parts for 40 songs spanning their entire career. The printed version is big and kinda expensive but I've never seen better.

The 2 songs that we did in our Rush Tribute in the '90'a that were the most fun to me were Natural Science and Red Barchetta.
Honorable mention to Bastille Day and Something for Nothing.

This version of Working Man would be a nice cover and not too tough with oddball time signatures etc. After all it’s Working Man but with a cool reggae-ish intro. Passage to Bangkok might be a good one too in these days of quasi legal weed.

I'm in The Rush Tribute Project, so we pretty much cover everything! For fun songs to tackle other than the radio hits, these are all really enjoyable (from old to newer) ....

Anthem
Something for Nothing
Circumstances
Different Strings
Witch Hunt
The Weapon
Between The Wheels
The Big Money
Lock & Key
Chain Lightning
Bravado

Subdivisions is one of my top favorite Rush songs, good on you for starting there :)

A lot of good suggestions for a second song in here... I guess I'll suggest @randocaster honorable mention of "Bastille Day." Never learned the whole thing, but if I get bored with whatever I'm doing on the guitar, I'll often whip out the intro and verse riff to that one. Super fun one to play, IMO.
