Is it possible to take the virtual capo to the next level and have alternate tunings as an option??

No, as that would require you to have a special guitar with individual pickups on each string.
The Boss GT-10 is a good option if you need altered tunings and have such a guitar.

I think Admin M@ means the GP-10 for alternate tunings (not the GT-10) and yep, a hex pickup is the only way to change tunings digitally in real time .

I would go for a used VG-99 as the GP-10 is known to have some glitches with alternate tunings.

The other way to do it is to run each string from the hex pickup to it's own Midi controlled Whammy XT or similar pitch shift pedal that has Midi, and programme each pedal to tune each string the way you want. That's a lot pedals just for that one function though, so Roland/Boss stuff is the way to go.
