About to crash / Goodnight kiss solo

I really like Petrucci's tone on this album. But I find it difficult to nail the smoothness in his lead. I usually have a drive block before the amp, but not in these two recordings. I think the highs are slightly more smooth this way, but the lows are very muddy.

Yeah I love that album!

It's the Mark IV sim I have the master vol set quite high(7.00), I can't get it to sound good with the master vol set at the "right" level (3-4)

The tone sounds good! But I think you really should have the master level at 3. Sure it's lower volume but the tone gets a LOT smoother. That's what gives you the lead smoothness. And ofcourse Petrucci's lead tone nowadays has like 10 different delays higher than the original tone so it doesn't matter if he plays clean or not.
