5150 build.

If you’re not worried about accuracy the Gotoh 1996 is the one I would recommend. You need the long block . You can use it on the existing studs and keep the nut that is on already.
by 'accuracy' do you mean keeping in line with the aesthetic of the frankie? if so, changing things up doesnt bother me if i gain performance/quality. would the gotoh take the d-tuna?

is this the one Andy? go with 40mm block size. I believe its a brass block too

I see someone had upgraded to a 1984 reissue floyd rose but that costs 3x what the gotoh costs...

Yes that is it with the 40mm block. The Dtuna was designed for the Gotoh originally and works best on it. By accurate I mean the same as the real Frankie.

The1984 is good and the best original Floyd but it’s not better than the Gotoh. Ed’s music man guitars had the older version Gotoh the 1988. The 1996 is just a revision to make it the same footprint as the original Floyd making it an easy retrofit.
of all my FR trems my favorite one is on my Music Man axis 2002. Its buttery smooth. Other than that I really liked the wilkinson ws130 fine tuner one that I put on my Charvel (now sold) Thanks for your guidance Andy! just ordered the Gotoh

@Andy Eagle I should probs just DM as i dont want to detract from your thread. So I just got the Gotoh 1996 trem. On their website the trem radius is set to 350mm (just under 14") and from what I've read the EVH Frankie FR1000 is set for 16"(I'm going to check this with my radius guage to be sure) but if so ..should I get shims?

and second: I want to pull the D-tuna from the EVH FR1000 and put on the Gotoh. ..should be good to just swap yeah?

Yes just swap the Dtuna. The radius on the 1996 will actually be incredibly close so you should fit it and measure the action at the last fret to work out if and what shims you need. Set the action to exactly 1 mm on both Es and see how far out the others are. You want all to be identical.

Is the official strap hook evolution over the years on 5150 as follows? I'm trying to make sense of the different evolutions over the various years going by pictures in chronological order.

  • Small eye hooks, normal position top horn and back, no washers
  • Small eye hooks, normal position top horn and back, nylon washers
  • Bigger eye hooks, change to top horn at the back and normal position at the bottom, nylon washers
  • Change to metal washers
  • Change to drilled metal washer (Like "5150" number 1 amber Music Man)
  • Bottom eye hook moves to higher position to make way for cable hanger.

(Bottom eye hook moves every position imaginable in between years judging by the latest swiss cheese pictures)

If you want accurate it’s not easy because the one in the right physical size that is commonly available is too thin in the metal. If you want an 86 .View attachment 156278

I was gonna say this guitar is such a rabbit hole but its more a rabbit hole lined with claymores. 🤣

I think the current EVH Wolfgang eye hooks are 6ga, which I've got on my Wolfgang, I may use them again for my build as the size is just about right visually and practically to me.

They look similar to what is now on 5150 but I'd have to try and measure it and compare.
