1987x - why am i clipping?

Trying to get some sort of an 80s gainy patch going.

I tried putting a drive in front with the gain down and level up - instant red light.
Removed that. Tried to turn up the master volume. Not much gain until I .. well.. turn up the gain. Anything after 4 gives me the red light.

Suggestions?

The rest of the settings are pretty much at defaults.

You're clipping the output. Turn down the level.
