I mentioned this elsewhere, but switching the stock tubes on the Severe 2 to the same tube from a different manufacturer helped me tame some of the hairy high end on that amp. Subtle, but easy and effective.
 
+1 I haven't played a lot with these yet, but the few times that I have, I've been impressed. It isn't subtle to my ears or fingers: really changes something about the character and the distortion response that can't be found by changing the tone stack or EQ. Very welcome addition!

I also remember changing tubes a lot on real tube amps, and in the power section not noticing a lot of difference most of the time. I think the 5-10 minute gap between trials when doing it with real glass was probably covering up some differences for me.
 
Now they all say they can't hear anything.
However, the Engl Savage I owned, had two KT88s in it and I like the KT88 JJs, they add some kind of depth.
