Learn all 5 pentatonic shapes. This will help you connect lines up and down the fretboard. Learn the chord-scale for the major scale (7th chords). This will teach you what a "key" really means. For fun, learn the 4 inversions for the chords from above on the top 4 strings. Helps with comping.

...tell folks that the $1000 mark and above is where you find instruments vs. "guitars". I'd say to refine your tastes (pickup types, neck shape, body contour, etc) and try to find a fine instrument that checks all the boxes. Buy a few cheaper guitars to experiment with other variables and...

I haven't heard these but have owned a fair number of Focal speakers. They make great stuff. You can find these on sale for under $600. https://www.focal.com/us/monitoring-speakers/alpha-evo/alpha-50-evo Step up would be the Shape 40s at twice the price.

Has anyone put locking tuning pegs on their guitar?

A nice thing about the stretcha approach is that you stretch the entire string. Previously I'd do lots of bends but I'm sure I didn't stretch much near the lower frets or over the pickups.

I'm a big fan of the Focal Shape series. I'm using a pair of 40's as the mains for a 72" TV in a 20x20 room and they sound great. The sealed enclosure produces tight low end which is great for rock tracks. Maybe not as good for EDM. The 40's will run you about $1,200 for the pair new. Maybe...

Am I a Fusspot Curmudgeon for Wanting my new product NEW, and in a NEW Box?

Think of it this way - wouldn't you want to be able to sell your "lightly used", "in a smoke free house", etc. gear? Online shopping has changed the physical store landscape. Do we try to get the EQ right going in?

I would get a good basic sound going in and then do shaping EQ within the DAW. You certainly want to tame highs and lows say, cuts at 85 and 6500) before going in. If you are listening to reference songs and/or stems, there is likely a lot of EQ happening during mixing. For example, to get...

Please post an audio recording of your guitar through the Axe so we can compare. Also, note that there are usually studio effects added after the guitar chain that may be a component of what you hear in your references.

Anyone own a Ibanez Prestige S6521Q?

I scraped the heck out of the finish leading into the jack on my S the first day I had it. The J. Custom and JCRG have the jack on the side of the body and that can also be a bit of a pain, but I really didn't bond with the S jack shape/location.

Focal Shape 65 vs Adam A7X

I like the shape series because of the sealed design. IMO, they beat out the Adam at that price point. From there I'd recommend the Focal trio be and then the ATC SCM 25.

Make patches that sound good to you but leave some room for the bass (hi pass 85-125 ish but maybe even up to 200). At mix time, guitars can get hi passes up to 200-500 depending on what is going on. That sort of shaping is done in the context of the mix and what needs to stand out at any...

    Studio monitor for Axe-Fx III?

New FM3 user - question about studio monitors

Wish Pedal as modifier : cycle through values more than once

What I mean is that the pedal input is continuous. The midi value sent can go from 0-127 just the same in a V or W and use the full midi dynamic range.
  36. fractalz

Wish Pedal as modifier : cycle through values more than once

Right. For a simpler example, take a V shape. As the pedal moves from 0-127, the values go from 100% -> 0% -> 100% If another modifier used W shape, it'd go through this cycle instead: 100% -> 0% -> 100% -> 0% -> 100% So, you'd get a bunch of combinations. To cover the entire set of...

    QSC K12's Users?

Actually, I do both. 85Hz or higher Low cut in the cab block and the Ext Sub. Also, Hi cut around 7500 Hz in cab block. Just sent a direct feed to house K12s and, for the first time the FOH turned up my treble a touch. I call that victory in terms of tone shaping :)
  42. fractalz

    QSC K12's Users?

I also put the HF mode to "vocal". This seems to bring up the mids and makes it sound flatter. I've had issues with bass when the K12 is on the floor near a wall. Probably sounds different in wedge mode or on a pole. I engage "Ext Sub" which, I believe, adds a 100Hz hi-pass.
  43. fractalz

What difference does scale length make?

Also, the shorter 24.75 "Gibson" scale length makes some chord shapes easier to grab lower on the neck and, conversely, some shapes harder to grab further up the neck. You'll find jazz players often using shorter scale length guitars.

Turning a traditional guitar cab into a 'flat response' cab via digital EQ

I've had a similar idea and thought of doing an inverse TMA of the cab and then serial combining it in cab lab with the IRs I want to use. So, this would be shaping one guitar cab to sound like another and shouldn't require 20-20k reproduction. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
