Cliff, correct me if I’m wrong but I think the modeled amp didn’t have the 0.68uf cathode bypass cap as well. This would take away some fizziness. I find it interesting you’re hearing more gain with the model, my real 1987x distorts WAY earlier on the dial than the modeled amp. I think it’s because my amp has the bright cap.
Mine sounds like this one:
The difference is it’s your presets changing so you know the stuff better than random amps at a store.Think of this firmware as going into your local music store to try a bunch of really cool amps and plugging in after the guy before you has just finished playing, all the amps have his settings , what would you do if the bass was too high or there was not enough gain ?
Would you call the salesman and say this Mesa sounds like crap and I think it’s broken
Or would you turn knobs ?
Serious question
Ah, I see. Sorry! I must have misunderstood your original postYes, Bright Cap/Switch is a must for AC/DC
Like I wrote I increased the presence from 2 to 5 in FW25b. In FW24.05. that was not necessary, 2 was enough.
I compare the same amps like in this preset before always with Bright Switch On. Refer to attachment with FW24.05, Scene 4 (1987x) and 6 (1959SLP)
My 1987x bought new from 2010s also had a bright cap.My 1987x from the 1990s had a bright cap.
The 1987X model is based on a reissue 1987. It doesn't have a bright cap. Use one of the Plexi 50W models for the vintage sound of a 1987.
Just took my shiny new Plexi tone to practice and found that my guitar became weak and disappeared when everyone else was playing. I had committed one of the classic blunders: dialing in too much gain at home. I take back what I said about needing more gain.Initial impressions on my main amp, a Plexi 100W Jumped:
Settings
- Definitely requires re-adjusting settings with an open mind because the changes are substantial.
- Had to turn the gain up quite a bit.
- I turned the Normal channel up more, relative to the high channel. Normal channel is adding more body and less mud than before.
- Negative Feedback: on prior firmware, I had turned it up to 5.23 (purely on what I thought sounded/felt good, not authenticity). New default is 5.30.
Tone
- Overall very substantial change to tone and feel.
- More clarity. Tighter, more focused / less smear, especially the lows. Better string separation.
- Mids are punchier.
- Feels like there is a more solid core that each string is producing. Easier to dial in a nice beefy tone with less fat.
So far, I am loving it! This firmware is scratching an itch I couldn’t quite get on the previous firmware.
P.S. I made sure I set any advanced parameters I had manually tweaked to the same values after amp reset.
Gain is usually not the culprit, but a lack of mids ( usually... and I play with absolutely ridiculous amounts of gain... LOL )Just took my shiny new Plexi tone to practice and found that my guitar became weak and disappeared when everyone else was playing. I had committed one of the classic blunders: dialing in too much gain at home. I take back what I said about needing more gain.
I can concur. One of the few products that made my buyers remorse disappear within minutes. Hell every time Cliff gets quiet and releases a new update...I think "Yup. You made a killer decision"You absolutely will not regret it.
I crave for more details.
- Improved algorithms
- Nearly all amp models have been “remastered” as a result of new measurement techniques and analytical methods.

This might be psychoacoustic, but anybody else feels like changing the BMT values on some amps is also affecting the amount of gain? (Not talking about the Mark series where this is kind of the intended behaviour) I spent some time with the SLO and CCV so far and found this to be the case, but not sure if I am just hearing things that aren't there.
Hi @FractalAudio
the "Bright" slider in the revv gen red 3 add gain like the shred mode of a jp2c (in a way), is it a normal behavior?
$10k is a bit steep, does this include an assortment of groupies shipping with the amp?Introducing the Fractal Amp Vault Club(TM).
For a mere $10,000 annual membership fee, exclusive Club members can select three amps per year from the FAS Amp Vault to be shipped to them for one month to compare to their own amp(s) and Axe models. If a club member can prove an error or bug (not just "it sounds different"), they get their fee refunded and their favorite Amp modeled. If however they have previously complained and can't find any issues, they lose all privileges to complain about any FAS amp model.
Yes i think it can it does in the real world sometimes to take a Bogner XTC for example the bright switches affect gain as does the midsThis might be psychoacoustic, but anybody else feels like changing the BMT values on some amps is also affecting the amount of gain? Bought some Earthworks M50’s, didja?… new measurement techniques and analytical methods.
