FM3 Firmware Version 12.0

After going through several steps with support nothing fixed the scribble strip issue. FW12 shows FM3 Turbo on the boot screen but I got to thinking I bought my unit before the turbo came out, checked my old orders and the unit was from 2020. It was bought for church which ended up not happening because of covid, unit probably hasn't been powered on for an hour. So I roll back to FW5.03 and presets, so now it works correctly. Is there something I'm doing wrong or did I miss a boot loader update or???

Edit: Support has been great and is working on the issue - possible FW bug
I think (not sure) that is some kind of extra steps when upgrading from a firmware before FW8 or 9. I read on release notes or Fractal website sometime ago (as I said not sure)

Hi, I upgraded to v12 and installed default presets. Machine sound superb.
I wanted to notify that using preset 261, turning on Drive effect, FM3 stalled for a minute, display went black, then it recovered and continue working. I tried several times, and issue is consistent.

Regards,
Gregor

What is the preset name?

People may have different Display Offset than you so the name will help.

I have no Drive effect on Preset 261, "By Your Command". Pressing the Drive 1 footswitch causes a "Drive 1 NOT IN THIS PRESET" to show on the display. No freeze or black display. Mine is an FM3 Mk II Turbo.

It does not bother me.
I uploaded default presets and was just browsing trough them. Playing with this preset caused no responsivnes from buttons for a minute. Sound was still working fine.
Then it blanked for 15 sec and then restored the responsivnes to buttons.
I have FM3 with phones jack.

I've only just updated to FW 12.0. I noticed that metronome screen has changed from my old version. How do I use it now? I can change the tempo by scolling the A dial but I can't turn the metronome on or change the metronome volume because those nobs are all 'greyed out' How do I turn tthe metronome on?

On the unit, press the NAV Down button until the Metronome toggle lights up. Then you can turn it on or off using the VALUE knob or Knob A. You can also control it in the editor (Controllers → Tempo/Pitch).

I also noticed another possible issue @m_brown : when the metronome is on and you engage the tuner with output muted, the metronome continues to sound. I’m not sure whether that’s a bug or expected behavior.

I came from FM 10 and have now played 1 rehearsal and two gigs with FM 12.

I have two fm3 units (one turbo and one none Turbo). Currently i gig with the non Turbo unit.

My 2 Cents:
  • I really like the amp sounds even more now. Everything is slightly brighter but in a good way. A little more alive.
  • Many amps seem to have a little less gain. More specifically to me it sounds like when you got some power-amp distortion going in older presets in FM12 the amount of gain from this is reduced. Preamp gain not so much?
  • The Low End is tighter and potentially not as "deep" . Currently i am indifferent to that change as i use a 120 Hz cut anyway.
  • Gap-less switching is not working every time. At least on the non turbo unit.
  • CPU increased at least 3 %. I have no Kitchen -sink presets but .... potentially the next update (if there is one) might be to much for the non turbo units even on less demanding presets
  • Biggest noticeable improvement are some of the drives imho and the Silver Jub sounds way different and more like my old original
... at least i think.
  • I feel like the TC delay sounds a little different
  • In my opinion the tuner is a little slower ...
  • I need a tour on the new dynacabs. Some of them sound great some are really really weird.

Overall i really like it and want to thank FAS!!!!

What's the closest approximation of the new transistor power tube type (new in the latest AxeFX III firmware beta) in FM3 firmware 12? Looking forward to hearing the difference particularly in the JC120.😁

This really is a glorious sounding firmware apart from, I hate to bring it up again, the background noise on high gain sounds.
It's most noticable on high single notes, there's a sort of white noise fizz that gets worse as the note decays.
It's not the normal background hiss as I've tested it with the gate off.
I also had to increase my gate settings from 11 just for the normal background hiss so I'd say it's generally noisier.

Quite a few folk have mentioned this in this thread and some in the latest FM9 thread as well so would be much appreciated if Fractal could comment ?

Anyone coming from FW11, how's the CPU usage? I keep seeing mixed comments regarding the CPU. Somewhat concerned that every new FW seems to get more CPU hungry. I have FM3 (original) which is still on FW6 (don't ask me how that heppened..) and thinking of getting MK2.

Also, with the user cabs number being cut in FW12, anyone found an effecient way of updating multiple presets where the assigned user cabs are inslots 500+? I have a feeling I'll end up updating presets one by one manually..

I’m one of the people who picked up on a this with FW12. For me it was a change in the harmonics and artifacts from pushed tubes that sounded different than FW11. I got used to it and it’s not bugging me anymore but it’s still there. I’m not using any high gain tones though.

What you’re describing sounds like the normal intermodulation distortion that you get from overdriven tubes. The real amps do that. It’s like a crackling fizz on the decay most pronounced with multiple strings but the more gain you use the more IMD you will get.

I don’t think anything is wrong, it’s just different from where it was in FW11. It was mentioned that there were modeling changes for 12 so I’m assuming what I’m hearing is the changes.
