What guitar are you playing today?

2014 KE2 Eerie Dess

Had this thing for almost 6 years now and it never got the love it deserved because the previous owner had it refretted with super jumbo stainless and the luthier did an absolute s--t job. Sharp ends and high frets everywhere along the board. They also didn't shim the nut so basically every open string buzzed.

Finally got fed up with it and did an entire re-level and dress on it myself, added an extra shim to get the 1st fret height where I want it, and oh man she plays like butter now (could use a bit of polishing on the body tho 😅)

That is one crazy mofo! Beautiful Jackson. Weird as shticks, cool as winter breeze on a warm day!

Today?

A heavily customized Taylor 314CE. Her name is Matilda and I found her after going through all the same models at Guitar Center years ago after getting a sufficient bonus from work. I've mentioned the chase before, but I'd been watching a particular one for weeks, and got to the store after getting the check only to find that one was gone. By the end of the night we'd gone through all their others of the same model, including opening several that were in the backroom, and she was the last. I opened the case, hit a few chords, and, yep, that was the one, and though I'd never named another guitar, she was Matilda.

My tech, Billy O'Reilly, here in Phoenix, did some things to her that made her speak with more volume and projection, and reduced the action wonderfully. Then I replaced the factory pickup with something else, I don't remember what off hand, but it sounds great. Anyway, yeah, Matilda, playing James Taylor, Joni Mitchell and what not around the fire pit tonight.

And then later, after dinner while watching PBS, I grabbed my PRS SC-245 to plink as I watched. I hadn't played it much for years, however as I play Matilda I've come to appreciate the fact that the SC-245 is very much like an acoustic, since there's no tremolo. Its sustain and projection is just right, and even though I kept its factory 10s on it, they're much more comfortable after a few months of playing my acoustics again.

And, by "acoustics" I also mean I've been digging out my '69 Martin D35, which plays even better than Matilda. It's a dreadnaught so it makes my shoulder sore after an hour, but dang, having both has been growing on me something wonderful.
