So I returned my Helix Stadium XL to get an FM3...

Hello all,

I just returned my Helix stadium XL, and ordered a used fm3 mkII. It is going to ship tomorrow, so I guess I'll have it in about a week.
It's my first fractal unit. I've started reading the manual, but it's a little difficult when you don't have the actual unit in your hands.
I prefer watching some videos instead.

I'm mainly a high gain / metal rhythm player (tool, gojira, log, metallica, killswitch engage). Most of my guitars are equipped with fishman fluence pickups.
I use beyerdynamics dt 770 80ohm for monitoring, 90% of the time I'm playing, due to a newborn, and always use a pc app to tweak sounds through software app.

So.. do you have any advice for a me as a new user? Things to check out/watch out or do first?
Is there something I need to do or watch out in a used unit? Make backups/updates/ factory reset?

Welcome aboard! I don't think you'll be disappointed with the FM3! It's a fantastic unit! So powerful for its size!. Check out any videos with Cooper Carter, Leon Todd, Marco Fanton and also Jon Cordy .Either their own YT channels or G66 which usually have videos from quite a few Fractal users. Those are always very good!

If you can afford it go and buy Cooper Carter's FM3 class. it's worth every penny.

I'm curious why did you return the Helix Stadium?

Do a factory reset and update the device to latest firmware as described here.

Depending on how deep you want to go the learning curve can be steep but very rewarding. Expect that it will take a month or longer until you start feeling a bit competent with the device.

Some recommend starting with factory presets and modifying them to your liking. While they are very good and usable I think continual reliance on existing presets (factory or third-party) can make you skip learning a lot of really essential knowledge about how the device actually works and what it offers. Personally I went straight into the deep end and made a preset from scratch using the factory presets for ideas only. In FM3-Edit you can copy / paste entire blocks to / from clipboard so you can easily pick pieces that you like but don't have time to learn about. I suggest starting with a very simple chain with just the Amp and a Cab, then add Reverb and a few other things to your liking.

I'm curious why did you return the Helix Stadium?

I had a hardware malfunction with the onboard expression pedal. So I would return it anyways.
But this actually triggered me to really consider if I really like it, if am I going to miss it.

I had a difficult time dialing in sounds I was happy with it, and while it had an organic/ dynamic feeling, it also hand a mid 'honk'.
It's really difficult to explain it with words. It lacked pick attack even with booster on.
I posted my thoughts in another forum, for anyone interested I'll also paste it here:

I'm returning mine. I had an issue with the expression pedal (weird dead zone), so I would return it anyway as defected, and then I thought to myself:
Do I really want to replace it with another XL stadium?
Fearing that the issue with the expression pedal is a manufacturing problem and will be facing it again some time in the future, at first I decided to return it and pre-order the non XL version. No on-board Expression pedal, no scribble strips, fewer thing to risk of failing in the future, that will affect the re-sale value of it. Cheaper, so much easier to sell it as used in the future, much lighter and smaller. I don't really need 4 fx loops and 2 instrument inputs, a/b & c/d external controls is very nice but I can live with just one expression and switch my amp's channels with a midi relay if i'll really really need both.

The following days I realized that I didn't really miss stadium. At least anymore than the OG helix I sold to fund the stadiums purchase.
Key factors for this:

I liked the wifi connection. Did not have many issues. Do really need it? No. My desk is close, running a cable is not a problem for me, using the device as a daw requires a cable anyway so, I could live without it.
Same with Update over wifi.

Touchscreen is a very nice feature. But I have the unit in the floor in order to change snapshots etc so I use the app anyway. Bending over all the time is something i hate, that's why I loved the edit mode in the og helix.

Showcase. I loved it. I loaded stems of songs over wifi, muted the guitar track, and programmed the stadium to change snapshots for the different parts. I enjoyed it especially in some songs with a lot of sound changes such as tool songs with different overdrives, delays on/off, and effects on/off, for only a bar. I think they should also add the ability to activate/de-activate an effect in a song or change the values of it within the same snapshot. Like activating a wah and program the movement of it in a solo. It took me a lot of time and a lot of bending over to do the programming and place the change of snapshots at the exact time because there is a little delay between the changes, and because you can't do it via the app currently. Also had many crashes and bugs, but the result was really satisfying. Like having a guitar tech backstage. Also Sharing the songs could be a nice Idea, but a little difficult due to copyright I suppose.

But I would not rely on showcase in a live situation with a full band, only in a one man show situation and only if the bugs are completely sorted out.
Will I miss it? Maybe, but I can do the exactly same thing by connecting my hx stomp to my pc and using gig performer. Also this way I can even move the wah in the solo sections by midi. And organizing it in songs setlist etc.

Focus view: cool idea. It gives you an idea of what everything does. In some cases I wasn't happy with any of these 5 default settings though. It would be very cool if changing the values of an effect or an amp would also rotate the actual knobs in the image, and not just having a static picture to look at.

About the xy axis feature: Ok kind of cool, but realistically how are we supposed to use it live? I mean if the unit is in the floor, should we bend over to use it? This thing can only work if you have the unit in a stand and use showcase for everything else.

I think that a usefull feature they can add, is the ability to link the screen with a phone or tablet. That way you can use your phone to control the stadium, and touchscreen isn't even needed! Also the stadium remains in the floor.

So it all comes down to tone, feel and amps. For my style of playing (high gain stuff), stadium did not do well.
I liked the revvs. And the cali 2c++ (kind of). But in my case (hot output active fluence pickups), it took me a lot of tweaking to dial-in a sound I liked, and even then, the feel it was a little strange. It had a cocked wah sound and feel. More organic and more dynamic that OG helix, but still. I felt the same way with the legacy amps, so I don't think it's agoura, but something in the inputs? I had better results with passive pickups, or the fishman's passive voicing. But still the mid honk was there. I kind of missed my og helix a little bit.

I liked the two channels in the same amp feature, but in some cases there was a pop sound tiny gap between changes.

I wanted the amps to sound great right away, with minimal tweaking, And not having to add comps, eqs, etc. And I really don't care about how close the modeled amp sounds to the real thing. I just want to like the sound.

If it wasn't the issue with the expression pedal I'm not sure If I would keep it or not. Probably I would, and be patient about it waiting for line6 to fix stuff. But all things considered, I'll probably not even pre-order the Non-XL for now. Maybe I will buy it in the future. When things are sorted out, and the device is stable, and updated with all new features. Made some backups. I haven't turn on stadium for days. And I really wanted to like it.

For the time being, i think will miss fiddling around with something new to me. So I went ahead and ordered a used fm3 MK II from reverb, at about 20% cheaper than new. It will be my first fractal product (Any advices?). I 've always heard nice things about fractal, but did not want so bother with tweaking that much, or option paralysis etc.. Then I realised that I was already tweaking too much with stadium in order to get a nice sound.

I wanted to compare it with stadium before deciding if I'll preorder the non XL. Fm3 will be shipped tomorrow.
I know that fm9 would be a closer match, but considering that fractal will announce new products some time this or next year, it seemed like the right choice. It still leaves me room to buy a non stadium XL or a stadium Stomp in the future.

p.s. Sorry For the long post and my bad english

p.s.2: I made some videos about the pedal issue in order to show the dealer the problem. I'll also post it here for anyone interested:

That's why I don't want a modeler with a built in expression pedal, they are the most likely part to fail.
You're right but it's very convenient. Scribble strips and screens also tend to fail but we love them.
I actually think it is was a manufacturing problem, that all stadiums will suffer from sooner or later. Time will tell.

No paid lessons required.

Try some factory presets or try making your own. Learning front panel helps a ton but fm edit is the goods.

Dont crank master volumes on amps you wouldnt crank them on in real life.

Enjoy!

Yep. Search for your specific model in the autoeq site. Choose the 10 band eq in the right dropdown menu and apply the eq settings in the output eq of your fm3.

^this was extremely usefull! thanks!

What I usually do is auditioning all factory presets, and mark which I like by saving them with a '#' sign at the end of the name.
Then I'm auditioning all factory presets again using different guitars, also looking out for interesting effect settings. Those I save with a '?' sign.

I try to do this different days to avoid ear fatigue. I delete presets I don't like only If I run out of space.
Then I'm borrowing things and settings from those presets to create my own, having a sound or song in mind.

An FM9 which does two amps ect. costs less than Stadium money, so what made you go with the FM3? Not judging, just curious.
You're right. I Did this for three reasons:

1) There is a chance I won't like the fm3. Being my first fractal, and having a newborn (so less time), there is a possibility that 30days-return policy of g66.eu wouldn't be enough for me to explore and really learn the unit. So I decided to get a used one to avoid the stress. Cheaper to buy, much easier to sell if everything goes wrong.
2) I think that fm3 is capable of doing everything I need. I don't need to mix two amp blocks anyway. If I really like the fm3, and I'm missing features that fm9 is able to do, I'll sell it and get the fm9. I've built 2 compact arduino-based footswitch midi controllers, so foot switch limitation is not a big deal for me.
3) I read that a new generation of fractal products with touch screen etc is coming, sooner or later. So this will make prices of current generation products fall. As with helix. Buying an fm3, gives me more "room" to invest in new fractal products, or other products anyway, with minimal "loss".

But I'm really optimistic that I'll like it guys. I can't wait to get my hands on it!

I came from many years with Line 6 to Fractal 10 years ago and have not had any interest in going back. You seem to be going about this transition logically.

I will add, forget most of what you learned in the Line 6 world. Don't try to understand the FM3 workflow fit using that paradigm. While there are basic similarities, Fractal terminology is different - Snapshot, for example, does not mean the same thing on both platforms.

Understand the meaning of and differences between Blocks, Channels, Scenes and Presets.

I had a difficult time dialing in sounds I was happy with
A couple chords thru the factory presets on FM3 will blow you away tbh. Especially with the new beta firmware which to my ear is the biggest change in the amp modeling since I switched to fractal. When they release an amp modeling update it improves all the amps, unlike line 6 which never touches the existing amp models, which is why there is such a big gap between L6 and Fractal on most of the amp models.

beyerdynamics dt 770
These headphones are extremely bright and thin so they will not be able to give you an accurate representation of the amp modeling. First thing I would do is take some of that $1000 you’re saving by replacing Helix stadium with FM3 and replace them with a flatter headphone, my preference is Ollo X1.

I was considering this. Maybe a little bit too expensive thought.

Good choice. Helix is fantastic tool. but I feel it is 80% of Fractal. But that is a very good 80%.
OG helix yes. Stadium has something weird. At first, you have a pleasant feeling playing, but the more you get into it, the more you realize that there is something off. I had OG helix for 6 years and sold it to fund the stadium's purchase. helix's legacy amps through stadium sounded like having a cocked wah sound.. completely different than they should. There are some interesting features, but the unit is really buggy at this point.
I wouldn't rely on it for a gig. I'm confident that they will fix things, but I really think they should postpone the release for 6 months or so.

I've written my opinions in the post above.

Anyway back to the fm3.

This is a good recommendation. I use the AutoEQ suggested correction curve for my set of headphones and it has made a big improvement in my ability to get presets to translate well between headphones, studio monitors, FRFR, and live though the PA. I added the toggle for the global output 1 EQ to the global performance controls page so that I can easily turn the correction EQ on when using headphones and then turn it off for all other applications.
