With all the new Tonex Brown Sound collection hype, Burgs new The Brown Sound preset kills it.

Everyone is hyping Tonex over at other forums these days. I haven't been that impressed but this new Brown Sound collection is really getting attention. Fortunately, you can try before you buy and it was the best collection I've tried but I didn't like it enough to buy it. I've got the software version of Tonex because it came free with a package deal I got from IK. Well, I just upgraded my FM3 to the latest firmware beta and was amazed at the improvement in all my favorite presets. When I got to Burgs The Brown Sound #039 I was very impressed. This one smokes that Tonex collection IMO. Don't go buying that until you upgrade and try this one.

I didn't spend much time on this preset before but really love it now. I'm just missing that 2nd JVM OD2 preset :)

Thanks for this! I will try this out immediately, as I’ve been looking at the ToneX collection, but can’t justify the Price.
This is totally what I’m looking for!!

Thanks for the heads up, 10 is the best update yet imho I'm still stunned at the touch sensitivity and dynamics (coming from an ax8 originally and now the fm3).

I got the Tonex Brown Sound Collection,I think it sounds incredible..Better than the AxeFXIII models?..I don’t know,I like those too,but the Tonex sounds really, really good..it’s “that “sound..

@Burgs has multiple iterations of the preset, and seeing the progression of it over time in his postings, along with his videos, is wonderful fun.

https://forum.fractalaudio.com/search/4369385/?q=brown&c[users]=Burgs&o=date should help.

I thought it sounded good.. just not as good as my FM3 V 10. Do you have the pedal or software version? I have the software and it's biggest issue is the gain staging. I'm sure the hardware pedal sounds better than the software.

I have the pedal, but I don’t have every single capture loaded on the pedal,so I audition using the software…I will say this,I hate plugins..never used one that I liked..until this one..It really sounds like those albums,it’s THAT sound, provided you use a lower output pickup..I can’t get the AxeFXIII to sound exactly like it..I don’t use any modelers or amp sims,I run my amp into the Fractal for FX,routing,IR’s,etc, but the Tonex has me reconsidering,it sounds so good..but all this stuff is subjective, you like what you like..

I too have had outstanding results with a ToneX One using direct captures and a little room/reverb, in the FX loop of my FM3 while utilizing the FM3's Cab Block and FX.

ToneX is a great way to add another great sounding Amp Block to the FM3 which only has one, or to use as a tube power amp sim with room/reverb for an external preamp.

i got the fm3 specifically to recreate the brown sound. The problem is with every update my preset drastically changes. And quite honestly it never nailed it just right.. it got in the realm but never exact. I’ve always had a major dislike for anything by IK multimedia like amplitube, tone x, etc. the gain staging always caused me some major issues. And I ended up deleting all of my purchases from them.. but heard about the pack & redownloaded and fired up the brown sound and tonex and it is the exact tone I’ve been searching for all these years! No tweaking, no eq’ing, no endless search for the right ir. It’s sounds and feels so amp like. Which is what I could never get from the fm3. I don’t know.. never expected it to sound so damn perfect. On the fence about selling my fm3 if the tone x captures are getting this good lol

Tonex is killing it. Anyone with doubt just download the free vst. I produced albums with just that for main guitar tones. What i don't like about them is their business model.

The sound and feel of the Tonex improved dramatically with the V2. It is now on par with the NAM.
Would you say you get less digital and better sounds out of than your fractal product? Idk why, but I sure am. It’s really does feel and sound like a real amp.

ToneX does sound really good. I do have an issue with their business model, same thing with Neural DSP. FAS is the only player that actually respects their users despite the fact that they could make a lot more money otherwise. That was a pretty big reason I chose the FM9 instead of QC. I'd rather vote with my wallet and support someone who is not trying to milk his users. That being said, I wonder what the next evolution of FAS products will be and if Cliff thinks there is still room for improvement in simulation or if ML will become part of the equation at some point.

Yes, the Tonex sounds and feel are almost like real amps, but with Fractal I find the sounds I'm looking for easier and faster. I also think the playing feel of Fractal is top notch and the sounds are not ashamed of the capture technology in my opinion. And yes, I also use captures sometimes. I can't talk about highgain sounds because I almost never use highgain sounds. I used to use almost only captures. I used to use only captures with QC. I don't have that device anymore, I sometimes use the Tonex plugin version in Daw, but I hate the Tonex pedal itself so I haven't used the pedal itself in a long time. If I want to use captures and a pedal, I use the Dimehead NAM Player pedal. It's a great pedal with less than 1ms latency and is more comfortable to use. I've also used Fractal's VP4 together with Dimehead and it works well. These days, however, I use the FM3 +VP4 combination the most and I'm more than satisfied with its feel and sound. Fractal's versatility and incredibly good editing capabilities are great features. I've sometimes tried adjusting Fractal's models compared to Amalgam's captures and they are really close with the same cabinets and by adjusting you can actually make them sound exactly the same.. so I came to the conclusion that why am I constantly looking for new captures (hundreds if not thousands) I learned to adjust Fractal's models and I can get the same and maybe better. Also, a really huge amount of stuff! Thanks to Fractal for that.

What does digital sound like?
It’s hard to explain, but just not very “alive”. Almost blanketed and Just missing frequencies you’d get with a real amp. Like it’s so crisp and modern sounding to the point it sounds like your playing was actually programmed? I can’t get every nuance out of the fm3 I would get with a real amp and it’s very evident when doing a side by side. And to be fair, yes the fm3 is a digital product. lol but with tonex’s brown sound pack, it feels and sounds like a real amp in every way. I feel bad saying it but the fm3 amp and cab blocks just produce very good plugin quality tones. they are no doubt the best plugin tones you’re gonna get, but still plugin tones. Which is why I use the word “digital”.

That's not a "digital" sound, though. As you know from your own experience, digital can sound great. No one ever left a movie theater complaining about the crappy digital sound.

But you're hearing something you don't like. It would be good to figure out why. Yours is the only complaint of its type that I've heard in 15 years of Fractaling.

If you've found a rig you like better, just use it! It's way cheaper too. Why waste your time and energy here?

Post a preset, a DI and a clip of where you want that preset to be (in another thread for proper focus).

I am not a fractal guru, but Im sure theres some tweaks that maybe arent at the forefront that explain why the fm3 wasnt hitting the mark. Hell it could just be the IR.
