Presets in the Fractal version also store all channel settings including gain, volume, and tone controls, unlike the physical version, as I understand it.

It’s part nostalgia for me. I had an original and regretted selling it. But then I had a VHT classic for power . It sounded fantastic but weighed a ton. With this I could put it four cable with my axe3 and amplify it fr fr switching seamlessly between axe preamps and X88. I have a Diezel VH 4 that this could replace and unify my rig.
 
I had one of the originals, along with an X99 with a Soldano 100 watt power amp. Three of my more egregious selling mistakes, in retrospect. I’m glad to see them coming back!
 
I have an FM3 (non turbo) and a VP4, with an EV PXM FRFR. If I purchased this preamp could I hook it into that setup to add a bit of tube tone, or alternatively any ideas of an amp to add to this to emulate a complete preamp/amp head that wold be used with a non powered cabinet?

If you use the power amp sim and the IR any FR FR or monitor. Or like on old school X88R in to a tube power amp.
