Axe3 user Borrowing FM3 for a fly rehearsal Q's

Hey everyone, I've been flying w my Axe3 for years now and I have to fly to SLC for a 1 nite rehearsal and DON"T feel like dragging my rig there. So I came up with a plan.......Borrow an FM3 and carry it on!

First, I just gotta say AMAZING how easily my Axe3 presets imported into the FM3. With just a few minutes of tweaking my kitchen sink patches are ready to go!

Second, I was hoping for some feedback on some routing Qs. On my Axe3 I run 2 amp blocks stereo into multiple outs....FOH stereo L&R....my backline stereo L&R into my Matrix GT1000FX.... and finally stereo L&R into my Shure wireless IEM's.

My backline at rehearsal will be https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/5150HDEL34--evh-5150-iii-50-watt-head-with-el34-tubes and I will use it's effect return from my FM3. However effects return is only 1 input so my Q is how does my stereo preset from the FM3 stay full bodied if only coming out of output L, or should I get a dual TS to TRS 1/4 adapter and run TRS into the effects return?

For my IEM's same Q, I am gonna bring my cheap lil https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/U4Set--xvive-audio-u4-wireless-in-ear-monitoring-system and again it has only one XLR input, so will my stereo preset from the FM3 stay full bodied in my ears out of XLR output L or should I buy a 2 into 1 XLR adapter so I get both outs of the FM3?

And then there the question of the best way to set everything on my I/O menu of the FM3 lol!

Yep, if you’re going from stereo to mono, just pick a side (L or R) and use it to feed your backline amp and IEMs. If you have really wide stereo patches with hard-panned amps, ping-pong delays, expanders, etc. you’ll want to reconfigure those patches anyway, to make sure they sound good in mono. I’d make sure to monitor from the same side (L or R) as what you are sending to backline/FOH, too.

Sounds like you are going to make a few changes to this setup. Are you using IR's with your AXE III presets?

Ya, I am going to try an avoid mono. I bought Y cables to I can get both sides of both outputs and see then what happens

You'll get both sides, but since it's going to be summed to mono, you'll hear the difference right away. The only way to get true stereo, is with 2 distinct power sources. Being used to hearing your tones in stereo, there's a good chance you won't like it.

Running a TRS or y-splitter cables into the amp won't make it stereo, it'll just sum them to mono. Depending on if any effects are reverse phase they might cancel out (stereo chorus is a common one) when summed. I'd just use the Effects Send (out 2) and pick L or R to send to it for backline. It won't be your full stereo but for backline that should be fine.

For FOH you could use the full stereo L/R from the main outputs.

And for your IEMs maybe just use the headphone out, that'll give you L/R for your stereo effects in your ears even if your backline is just L.

Y-cables are fine for splitting, but not made for summing/combining outputs. That’s basically the same as connecting the outputs directly to each other, which puts an unnecessary load on the FM3’s outputs. You can sum by panning both left and right to center in your output block in your patch, though.

I instinctively would never do this, but that article was very informative regarding how to use wyes correctly. The electronics concepts were somewhat beyond my understanding, but really interesting nonetheless. Cool site! Lots of good reads.
