Should I dive in without hearing or playing the AX8?

Nice job on the order! Just a couple of items considering you have a used one coming... If you already know this, then just disregard :)

-While it's shipping (hopefully not UPS right now- argh so slow!!), read the manual. TWICE. It really does get a lot of important points across. (Ah- I see you're already doing this! +1 for you!)
-When you get it, reset it to factory defaults- there's no telling what the prior owner has done to some of the deeper settings. And whatever he did can really cause some weirdness on your end that's near impossible to track down.
-After that, update to current firmware 9.02.
-Probably go ahead and make sure you have the current batch of FAS presets.

I think that's the big stuff. Oh, and have fun. Lots. And lots. Of fun.

Thanks guys. I was wondering if I needed to reset everything what the first steps were so that is a very timely post. I'm keeping a 'OneNote' page with links to threads and videos so I can reference things I'm looking up now and of course take notes as a go. I'd like to be a little more organized with this than my past experiences with multi-effects where I save them with a name that meant something at the time I saved it but can't figure what it means two years later. Documentation and organization will hopefully be my friend.

I’m considering buying the alto ts210 for playing at the house. Seems like it would be much easier to experience the unit and determine if FRFR is better for me than a traditional cab. If I hate it I have 30 days to return. I don’t think I’d be able use the ts210 with the band. Other guitarist uses a Fender twin and I’m afraid the sound wouldn’t get unless I could somehow use my SS1x12 combo, the ts210 and a light mix in the PA.

I can't tell you. I jumped into the Ultra without hearing it. I hardly even heard any youtube examples. I don't trust those anyway. I just jumped. But I was ready. And I won. I've gone Axe Fx II, then AX8 and added a IIXL+

The TS210 has a 550 watt amplifier. I don't know why you think it can't keep up with a Fender Twin. Those powered speakers get loud AF, you should have no trouble using it with the band.

I think the sound spread might be a problem from what I've read, but I'll know better once I give a try. Fender Twin's 80 watts is #!#$ loud even at volume level 3 or 4. It carves out it's own space in the mix like a bully coming to take your seat in the front row....lol.

I got the AX8 yesterday and restored factory presets, then updated the firmware to the latest. Do the factory presets take up 16 banks and the remaining are the previous owner's? Also, does updating overwrite any modifications that were made to theses 16 banks?

The unit was noisy but I was at TV level while the kids were asleep, plugged into the effects loop of a small 1x12 solid state amp. That setup will not do the unit justice but it did help learn how to navigate banks, work the X/Y and understand scenes. I even delved into globally switching off the cab sim but put it back on since it was low volume and not moving the speaker.
