I’m guessing this has the original first issue DSP chips, JRC4558 op amps and orange drop caps throughout. These sound much better than the stuff Fractal is churning out now. I would avoid it though if the firmware isn’t the original version :)
I once did a gig in a bar and they had booked a male stripper to do his thing for the landlady while we played. His nickname was "Tripod" I'll leave the rest to your imagination.
I’ve just got my hands on a III and currently own a Kemper. One of the things I like about the Kemper is that a number key parameters appear on the front panel, such as reverb and delay level, delay time, gate threshold etc. How would I go about doing this on the III so I don’t have to do too...
I bought a Leonovo Yoga which is a 2 in 1 convertable with touchscreen. It was a great price and has a fantastic spec for the money. SSD, very good screen, very portable. Axe edit works great in tablet mode, turning knobs and flicking switches on the fly etc. I’m a Mac guy but happy with this...
I’ve done some covers where I’ve researched the guitarist’s gear, picked up the right guitar, loaded up the correct amp and effects and been blown away how close you can get to the original tone. It’s a very gratifying experiance and it just puts me in the zone with the original player. Great...
Nicely done! I was jamming along to this track the other week and nailed all the feedback parts using a Digitech Freqout pedal. Great bit of kit and my neighbours love me for buying it!
Hi mate, I remember you trying out my Ultra a long long time ago. Back on board recently with and AX8 after a while away and thoroughly impressed. Hope all is good with you!
In 1980 I sold a 1966 Vox AC30 for £300 and I bought a Carlsboro Rebel because I was sick of lugging the bloody Vox around! Also a Benson tape echo and brand new Arbiter Fuzz Face (found at the back of an old TV shop) which I originally bought for £20 went as well. The Rebel was pretty crap, but...
Hi All,
I’m back as a Fractal owner after some time away. It all started with an Axe-Fx Standard on firmware V3 many moons ago when I think there were only around 2 in the UK! I moved away from Fractal products on the introduction of the Axe-Fx II, largely due to the cost and at the time, the...
As an aside, I'm nearly at the end of a 14 day trial with Waves Virtual Mix Room: http://www.waves.com/plugins/nx#introducing-nx-virtual-mix-room
I've been using it with my HD600s and it's a pretty impressive add-on for headphones. If you don't have or can't use monitors, then this really helps...
The Rush track is interesting. Neil often plays along to keyboard sequences but the bands live monitor engineer stated in an interview that the band doesn't use click tracks. Could it just be he's able to lock down a tempo when it's needed?
Never understood why even last year they were still doing 3+ hours shows and punishing schedules, surely they could have just taken things a little easier. I'm convinced they'll be back, after a lifetime of touring it's part of their DNA.
You couldn't give those Carlsbro PA amps away a few years ago. They were the popular choice of the UK's working man's social clubs and the weapon of choice for club singers and bingo callers. They were also made just 10 miles up the road from where I currently live. I even bump into some of the...
MediaMonkey and Foobar are both good products. Foobar is fully customisable and you can even load VST audio plugins. MediaMonkey looks nicer and has good tag and album art working indexing features.
I recently bought a Thomas Blug Vintage Icon Series Strat and it's one of the nicest Strats I've ever played regardless of cost. Distressed guitars aren't my first choice but even this works on this guitar because of the played in feel it gives the instrument. I believe there are a few in the...
Maybe not for you then. It was the lower gain to crunch tones that I liked from this app, I'm not a high gain player although high gain stuff is in there. I think JamUp is better equipped for modern high gain but if JamUp doesn't float you boat then I'm not sure this will. Have to say though...
You can download a free version to try. IMHO JamUp is way better than Amplitude and this is way more versatile than JamUp. There is a CPU meter on this plug-in so anyone working in the DAW or Axe-Fx world will get this. Also latency is set in buffer sizes just like on a DAW the minimum being...
This is a superb app for ios:
http://www.yonac.com/tonestack/index.html
I have been using JamUp but I like this better. ABY signal paths, effects and amps in the signal chain only limited by the CPU usage, unlimited patches, it sounds really good and cost next to nothing.
Amazing. Soars like a bird and totally lifts the spirits. Can't imagine what it would be like to understand the guitar so well and to be able to take improvisations right outside the box like that.
I've been having the same thoughts myself seeing as how many users here fit them into their racks here as a matter of course. I work in electronics, mostly industrial control and before that I worked for Amek and built some huge mixers back in the 90s. In my opinion and experience in the UK at...
60s & 70s TV shows and their theme tunes. Thunderbirds, JOE90, Stingray, Persuaders, Starsky & Hutch, The Saint, UFO, Voyage to the bottom of the sea, Lost in space, too many to list. Oh, and Slade!
AdmiralB is right. Most cheap inverters create a kind of square wave AC which is OK for some applications but full of nasty harmonics. A true sine wave inverter would minimize this, quite a few on the net to choose from.
Very wise advice having hired, fired and made redundant people in my business, including members of family who worked for me. The Problem with most bands (and business's for that matter) is they start out as a bunch of mates with no structure, agreements or rules and it can end up very messy...
If you like the Porcupine Tree proggy vibe, here are 3 European bands making some great music:
Gazpacho - Gazpacho - Missa Atropos - YouTube
Anathema - Anathema- Untouchable (part one) (from Weather Systems) - YouTube
Riverside - Riverside Escalator Shrine - YouTube
Randy has been around for years. I remember importing an original album of his back in the 70s along with Frank Marino albums, great stuff. I guess the career as an original artiste didn't work but he sure can play!
I was lucky enough a few years back to here him play with his band in a small venue here in the UK. Trower tone is about tuning 1/2 to 1 whole tone down, bigish strings and a high clean action. Then it's a loud Marshall head into a 4 X 12, the effects chain is well documented. For me when I...
That's the sad thing, it's not all bad just a bit of a lottery. The DEQ2496 is a great bit of kit when it works and the DDX3216 digital console was mind blowing for under £500, close but no cigar.
I've always tried to avoid slating Behringer gear, some of it is quite good and on the face of it it's very good value for money but for the last year it has been hell working with their equipment. I'm fortunate enough to own an electronics company and can work to component level and perform my...
Couldn't agree more. In all honesty a huge amount of my Ultra's capabilities remain untouched. Exploring the sonic capabilities just in the amp modelling let alone the effects would take months and months to work through, I barely venture away from a few favorite settings.
Another Nottingham user here. I got an Axe-FX standard many many moons ago by buying and importing from a guy in the states, it was on firmware 3.xx at the time! I was on the G66 waiting list for 10 months before I finally got an Ultra. Would love a II but simply don't have the money having put...
Caught the show two weeks ago in the UK, absolutely fantastic, brilliant musicianship and really loved Dweezil's playing. There's also a really friendly vibe from Dweezil and the band, enjoy!
Really enjoyed the Zappa Plays Zappa show in Nottingham England last night. I went to listen to some of Frank's music and was completely blown away by Dweezil's playing. Sticking around to sign autographs and shake hands at the end of the show just topped off a great evening. Music first, ego's...
I read somewhere that one night Koss didn't turn up for a recording session. They got some session guy in to play his guitar and rig and it sounded like absolute shite, feedback, buzz just awful. The next day Koss rolled in, picked up his guitar and just played the most stunning guitar part you...
From Tommy Emmanuel's facebook page;
"Thanks to John and Rena Petrucci for coming to my show at NY Town Hall! It was so nice to meet up - hope to see you again. It was an honour to have you in the crowd! - TE CGP"
Outrageous talent!
I'm an Ultra user and bought a HD500 with the aim of using it as a backup and small rig for pub sessions. I really wanted it to work and I tried and tried but the differences are just to great between these units. For me the biggest difference was the feel, the Axe-Fx feels like a tube amp, the...
Most reputable manufacturers (FAS is a prime example) will make every effort to ensure your product is built and tested to a very high standard before it ships but there is a limit to what can be tested. I run an electronic manufacturing business and some parts especially batteries can be a pain...
Me as well. Got to say I wasn't overly impressed to start with, but when you listen to it as a body of work and the theme and melodies sink in, wow! Also the musicianship on this album is phenomenal, I'd go as far to say the best playing I've heard from the guys. The recording and production...
I read the Tonebender is a Big Muff with the first diode clipping stage removed if that helps, I had one in the late seventies and hated it! With Hackett so much is in the technique and phrasing, no surprises there then.
Quite often I use two amps. some times they are very similar sounding amps but I pan them to achieve a good stereo spread. When the patch is mixed to mono it still sounds roughly the same and I don't get any weird phasing effects or cancellation. Works great for stereo FOH and mono stage monitor...
For you Sidivan Steampunk Solstice - Home It's on my doorstep but I realise its an 8000 mile round trip for you. Should be easy for any time traveling steampunker ;)
Well there you go, over 30 years a Rush fan and still seeing them divide opinion as much as ever, I've heard and read it all over the years but that's part of the appeal :) FWIW, I love Geddy's voice but I think it has matured well over the years, they even tune to E flat for some songs now.
Can't wait for this album, I've been a huge fan since seeing them in the UK of the Farewell to Kings tour. I've Hardly missed a tour since then but I'm bitterly disappointed with the latest ticket prices, at over £90 a ticket I'm out. I'm really pissed with all the Ebay ticket touting as well...
Absolutely agree! Massive tone shaping tools at our disposal but an obsession with getting the Axe to clone a FenderMarshallVoxMesa vintage amp tone just like on the XYZ album :)
Hi Spence,
Thanks for the kind offer. Haven't even made the jump to an Axe-Fx II yet, things have been a bit tight financially, I'm sure you get my drift. I keep telling myself the Ultra does everything I need but underneath the desire to upgrade burns! If I hear your II and start hanging with...
That's great Matt. I ask because I run an electronic design and assembly business myself, It would be cool to meet up, hear the gear and swap a few experiences. Look forward to meeting up sometime soon.
Nick
Any plans to do demos in the Midlands? Couldn't get to the show on Sunday due to family commitments but would have liked to have heard your gear. Just out of interest, do you design or manufacture in the UK?
I haven't lusted for a tube amp since I got into the Axe-Fx but that PT100 crunch tone has got me really interested. Any idea on the amps lineage and what the circuit this amp is based on tone wise?
I live about 20 minutes away from CD. Can't imagine how it ended as the centre of the metal universe for a time but there you go. If you turn up there on a Sunday morning now you'll be treated to car boot sale and open market with guys flogging fake Nike trainers and Adidas shirts! I do remember...
The 80s felt like a very synthetic decade to me. It felt like I couldn't play the music I wanted to and had to pay as much attention to my personal appearance, clothing and hairstyle as to any music you wanted to play. In the UK we also had Thatcher and the culture of greed which made it even...
In the early days of the Axe-Fx there was of course no floor controller and it seemed to take an age for this to appear. People had various solutions and preferences and in my case I plumped for a Gordius LG. When the MFC finally appeared I had invested so much time and money in the LG the MFC...
That's scary. Everything about that song is pretty unique including the guitar tone and you've nailed it. I expect it would of taken Alex and Terry Brown days to lay down the original guitar track.
I've experienced this many times when connecting to laptops, In all cases it's been down to either a ground loop or poor quality PSU. I usually test for this by removing the earth wire from the plug, if the hum goes away it's a loop. Don't do this though it's dangerous unless you know what you...
I'm 50 years old and can't hear jack above 8K. It's so frustrating and makes a joke of the the FRFR thing since I have to crank the high end out of any system I use to compensate. That's why I don't get too excited about things being flat any more as my point of reference is screwed, I have to...
It's annoying but sometimes this happens. Known as the bathtub curve, equipment dies at the beginning of it's life or simply wears out and dies at the end of its life cycle. As a electronics manufacturer myself we try to apply as much quality control as practically possible to our products but...
Loved Gamma, used to cover Voyager in an old band I was in. I went to a Robin Trower gig a few years ago, the lead singer was Davey Pattison who sung on the Gamma albums, fantastic night!
Very sad news. The first Montrose album had a big impact on me and gave me the same buzz when I heard it like the first Van Halen album did when that was released years later.
Razor King off Gamma 1 is one of my all time favourites: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L4XdhtXHfsM
God speed Ronnie.
That is almost how I was doing it last year and it worked great. The thing to look out for though is the monitor mix, we had two mixes and feeds, one for me and one for the other guitarist. You're probably going to need multiple mixes, a guitar heavy mix for you from your Axe, the bass player...
At about 14 I saw Jimi Hendrix play the Star Spangled Banner on TV at Woodstock and from that moment on I wanted to play guitar. In 1978 I saw Rush play a small venue here in the UK. It was a cold February night with snow on the ground and we made the trip out to the gig by train not knowing...
TC-Helicon could do with some help, the guitar tones in this VoiceLive Play GTX demo sound truly awful to my ears!
