Using an external looper with the Axe

no luck searching the site for possible answers to the question below.........

I'm really close to upgrading my Standard with an Ultra, primariliy for one reason....................the Looper in the Ultra (at late night, I enjoy playing lead over a rhythm track)

I have a Boss RC-20XL and I would appreciate any advice on how to connect it with the Standard, such that I can lay a rhythm track using one Preset, then play lead with another Preset. Connecting the Looper before the Axe front panel Input doesn't seem to bode well, as the Boss seems to have a dramatic impact on tone.

Any advice is greatly appreciated. My set-up is in my sig below.
 
to add an effect into an effect loop on the axefx>
from the back of the axefx - output 2(FX SEND) to input of effect unit
from the back of the effect- output to axefx input 2(FX RETURN)

in the preset menu on the axefx- place an effect loop block at the point you want to send and return signal.
This placement can be done either in series or parallel.

I will give this a try later today. One question: does this mean I will need to place an effect loop block in every Preset I intend to use? for example, I lay a rhythm track with Preset #1 and want to play lead, over it, with Preset #4.
