Tonematching best results

Hey guys I was wondering whats the best results to get when tonematching ?
Do I have to strictly play the SAME riff with the exact same timing and notes for it to work or can I play randomly my guitar with "start local" on and then turn it off and then play the reference tone with "start reference" on & off?

Also I am exporting the tonematch into an IR and then reimporting into a cab I hope thats the right way to do things.

Assuming the tone your're matching is a recording of someone playing the guitar, it's important to play exactly the same thing. If you're tone matching some gear, use a sine sweep or broadband noise through both the source and target.
