The best power amp I have personally used was a Mesa Boogie Simul Class 2:90. This was years before the Axe-Fx existed, so I can't tell you how well it will work with the Axe. I would say that it does COLOR the tone a lot, and is extremely heavy. It made it so it took 2 people to get my rack from the car to the stage. Of course, to really take advantage of the special modes on it (Deep & Modern), you need a midi octopus if you're not running a tri-axis. That just complicates things more.

IMO, there's enough tube-ish stuff in the Axe-Fx that tubes are not necessary in the power amp. Just get a clean and accurate power amp (like Carvin or ART), and DO NOT skimp on the speaker cabs. Or the pickups in your guitar. Or the cabling. I still love my Bogner cabs after 9 years. This is the 3rd separate rig I've had them on. Even when I replace everything else, I never end up changing the cabs.
