On An Island Solo

Can anyone give me advice or perspective on how David Gilmour gets the "doubling" or "tracking" sound on his solos on the song "On An Island?"

I believe I can get the overdrive right but I am having a heck of at time trying to get the duplicate tracking he is getting...I have tried the pitch shift, short delay, and I even looked though the archive to see if someone had done it with another signal chain just to try to get the theory and I struck out. Maybe someone can point me in the correct direction.

According to Gilmourish.com the set up he uses is....

On An Island
Stratocaster, bridge PU
Gibson Les Paul Gold Top, bridge PU
Gibson lap steel guitar
Acoustic steel string guitar
- rhythm; acoustic guitar
- rhythm (solos); Cornish G-2
- background slide; clean signal with delay
- solo 1 (first part); Les Paul with Tube Driver and delay
- solo 1 (second part); Strat with Cornish G-2 and delay
- solo 2; Strat with Cornish G-2 and delay

I have a Cornish G-2 and a Tube driver and tried dropping them into a SDD 2000 delay then into a Hiwatt custom 20 with Fanes just to try to get the sound so I could go back to the Axe and re-create it and...well I need an objective opinion or some ideas.

Thanks.
