OMG9 SETUP HELP

Hi,

Just received my FM3 and FC6 this week. Tried installing the OMG9 layout. Some of the buttons listed in the PDF instructions are actually missing in the latest FM3 firmware. That aside, I am still having difficulty assigning the buttons the way that I'd like them.

I only use one preset so I don't even want a presets button on the FM3.
I only use four scenes (e.g. Heavy, Light, Clean, Lead) but roughly 8 are showing up on the FC6. I'd like only 4 to appear.
When I hit 'effects' on the FM3, the FC6 shows 3 effects and 3 scenes. It also shows effects that are not even in my preset.

Can someone please help? I am happy to pay someone for their time if they can walk me through this. I have a gig this Saturday and need this to be up-and-running ASAP. Any help is appreciated. This is way more complicated than the AX8!

The OMG9 layout is pre-installed in the firmware, so use it, not one you have to download. From the front panel go to Settings > FC Controllers > Reset > OMG9.

Once you have switched to it take time to use it. Give yourself a few weeks of using it, then, if you still think you need to change it read the switch functions guide a couple times while nosing around in the FC Editor before attempting to make changes. The FC system is extremely powerful but it’s not immediately obvious how it all works.

Load the OMG 9 as mentioned. Then you can go to FC edit. Pay attention to if you are viewing the FM3 or FC6. The FC6 has 2 views. Select the Scenes layout. Select FC6. Now you can edit the switch functions. I only show 4 scenes myself so the other ‘scene’ switches are now used for the effects I use the most like boost and drive. There should be tutorials on the net plus download the FC manual. It’s something you just have to try it out to learn it. Basically you load the layouts; presets, scenes, effects, and edit and save. Put it back on layout 8 before you exit. Good luck. My advice is to figure it out enough for your gig as is and then go through the learning curve.

When I hit 'effects' on the FM3, the FC6 shows 3 effects and 3 scenes. It also shows effects that are not even in my preset.
Read the manuals for the OMG9 layout and the Footswitch guide. The Effects layout is global and is for the common pedals/block types you use. You can define per-preset overrides to add switches for effects that are specific to a particular layout, either to override assignments on that layout, or in the Per-Preset layout page.

This is way more complicated than the AX8!
It’s not, it’s better because you can put exactly what you want where you want it. The AX8 had limitations.

I would abandon the OMG9 setup. You don’t want someone else’s setup, you want your own. That’s why this seems difficult.

In FM3-Edit, click the FC Edit button near the top right area. Now you are editing the switches.

Clear Layout 1. Click each switch representation and set the first item in both Tap and Hold to None. There is also a Layout menu item near the middle left of the screen and you can clear the layout there too.

This will be for your FM3. Now put what you want on those 3 switches.

Move to Layout 2. Clear that. Now put what you want there.

There is a Devices button near the middle right. Click it and set Startup Layout for the FM3 to 1 and for the FC6 to 2.

I’ve helped many who think it’s more complicated, and the reason is because they want to do x with the switches but they are pre-programmed to y. When we clear the layouts and put what we want, it can instantly become more clear on how to use it.

The Default and OMG layouts are great, but first you have to learn where everything is and more importantly where someone else put everything. If you start with a blank switch layout and just put what you want, the reinforcement of you doing that can help you remember where everything is and why it’s there.

You can still use the basic OMG9 setup:
1. Just because the Presets switch is there, that doesn't mean you have to use it. Don't worry about it for now.
2. The FC6 only has 6 switches. Just use switches 1-4 (assuming the scenes you use are 1-4) and just leave 5&6 alone..
3. Something is definitely wrong here. Reload the OMG9 setup then reboot your FM3. You might only have 3 active effects, but the FC6 should show you 5 effect switches and a "MORE->" switch.

Once you get comfortable using this setup you can go into FM3 Edit and set it up exactly the way you want it. But between now and Saturday is plenty of time to get used to how this works.

When I try to load OMG9 from the front panel, it freezes. I find the FC Edit part very confusing. I will pay one of you $100 if you can walk me through the setup.
I have an AX8 and that is easy to setup. I also have an AXE FX III w/ FC 12 and that is easy. The OMG9, however, makes absolutely no sense to me. I need someone to walk me through this. Please e-mail me epidemika82@gmail.com thank you

it may not be freezing, but loading. but try going to a blank preset first, then loading the OMG9.

however if you made a comfortable setup with the Axe3 and FC, then just do that on the FM3. it's the exact same process.

you don't need to use the OMG9. it's a specific setup that makes sense to some, and not to others.

OMG9 and the default layouts help you access ALL (or most) of the features of the units. some of us don't need that, and instead just put what you need where you want it.

I bought the OMG9 setup to use live until my waitlist for FM9 is over.

Current issues are:
  • Assuming in the OMG9 setup I keep the three buttons all the same (presets/tuner, scenes/more, effects/looper), when I hit the scenes button i cannot figure out in FC Edit how to designate a certain scene to a certain button on the FC6.
  • Similarly, when I hit the effects button on the FM3, its pre-determining which FX appear on the FC6. I can't figure out in FC Edit to choose which FX I would like on the FC6 buttons.
Any pointers on that? How do I get FC Edit to show me the FC6 layout for scenes and effects ???

When I hit 'scenes' on FM3, scenes are now appearing on both the FM3 and FC6. I'd like the FM3 to be 'parked' on layout 8 (omg9). Once those buttons start showing scenes, I don't know how to get the FM3 back to the three-button setup on the OMG9 layout.

In FC Edit I see 12 switches. Are the left 6 supposed to represent the FM3 and the right six supposed to represent the FC6? I just want to edit the FC6 parameters.

this should not be happening. i would install it again from the Setup menu.

no.

they represent the 9 Layouts. Layout 2 is the Scenes layout for the OMG9. go to Layout 2, and adjust it as needed. you can click the dropdown near the left side to "Show as" FC6 to make it easier visually.

FC-Edit only shows a full Layout, one at a time. The OMG9 system uses Layout 8 for the FM3 switches, and various other Layouts for the FC6.

both FM3 and FC6 share the same 9 Layouts. they aren't separate. you just only use Layout 8 on the FM3, and other Layouts on the FC6.

ok thank you for your help dude!

but how do I get FC Edit to just show me the buttons for the FC6 on layouts 2 (scenes) and 3 (effects)? that's what i'd like to edit.

but then i also have to 'show as fc6' ?
You don’t have to, but at first that can help. It’s the same switches regardless, it can help show the Views though.

Once you realize what that toggle is doing, you can leave it set to FC12 or whatever and just adjust it.

Chris's feedback ( and all the other Beta testers) feedback is always excellent.

This might help too:

When I first started modifying the OMG9 layout it was confusing, and it took some fiddling time to understand what Matt had done in it, then it clicked and I realized how impressive the layouts are in these gizmos. It’s deep magic, but, dang!

Yes, how we view the switches and views is just a bit of smoke and mirrors. After a little while I stopped playing with that setting.
