How do you think this will sound with something like the EHX 44?

I'm using a Friedman JJ right now (which I love,) but I'm sick of lugging around the head, and all the pedals...not to mention the hookups with the effects loop etc.. I have so many cables and pedals.

I have an EHX 44 I use for a back up with various pre amp pedals, but I'd like to just use the Ax8 with my 2x12. I assume there are power amp sims in the Ax8, so hopefully I wouldn't need a Torpedo or the like (plus I don't need the cab sims in the Torpedo because I use a guitar cab I'm happy with.)

It would work alright. I have one that I use as my backup power amp and it does a decent job especially for how small it is. My main power amp is a Carvin DCM 1540L. Much more headroom and sounds a lot better or I should say lets the Axe come through much better. Search some threads on power amp choices and you'll find all your options.

A matrix GT1000 would be the most popular I'm guessing. Thats only about 9 pounds i believe.

That will work. And it doesn't sound too bad. The 44 is my backup rig.

Thanks for the replies. I've read about the power amps recommended for the Axe Fx; just hoping the Ax8 would yield the same results (depending on what type of power amp settings are in the Ax8.) The Matrix is always at the top of the list, but that puts me into a rack mount situation and defeats the smaller gig gear quest I'm on.

I also really like the Crate Power Block. Very good sounding power amp and cheap too.

Runs either 150w mono or 75w stereo. Has a headphone out (great for AX8 ) has an aux in, effects loop, XLR out, bypassable eq section, weighs 4.5 pounds and costs about 125 bucks.
If your fractal breaks you can run it straight or with your stomp pedals and it sounds awesome.
