FRFR Question

Axe-Master
I posted this in the Axe-Fx II thread. In hindsight, the question may be better suited for this thread. If the mods would delete the other thread (https://forum.fractalaudio.com/threads/frfr-question.182633/), it would be greatly appreciated.

I currently use my Axe-Fx II into an AC30CC2 or AC4C1-12 (mostly AC4 at the moment), both have power scaling so I'm able to use either amp. at very low volumes but still get the overdriven tones from the power amp. distortion, (ie. MV=10, gain about 1/4). All my presets sound great through my headphones and I can also keep the volume low. The majority of the presets I use sound great through my amps. at low volume, thanks to the power scaling. However, I have a couple of presets that don't use a Cab Block, so they sound great through my headphones, but don't sound right through the amps. because of the way the guitar speaker reacts.

I would like to try an FRFR speaker, nothing fancy and nothing too expensive. After doing some research on the forum, reading this article https://www.sweetwater.com/insync/411-frfr-speakers/ and reading some reviews, I was thinking of giving the HeadRush FRFR-108 a try. I could still use my amp. connected to Out2 and for those presets without the Cab Block, I would use the HeadRush connected to Out1.

I have Tinnitus as well as other hearing damage, so I can't listen to anything loud because it hurts my ears. So my main question is, will I be able to keep the volume of the HeadRush down to a comfortable level, like I can with my amps. and headphones and still get the same or similar tones? I guess another way to ask the question, is do I have to crank the FRFR speaker to get good results?

Thanks!

I have a pair of the HR 108's and yes, you can turn them down to very reasonable volumes and have the exact same sound. They do not get "better" by turning them up. My experience with the Freidman ASC-12 seemed different. It did seem to open up and behave a little more like an amp as it got louder. The 108's can be quite bright, but I just turned the global eq high-end down. They may not be the most faithful FRFR's out there, but they sure are cheap and light.

Appreciate the feedback!

In terms of reliability, durability...that kind thing?

I can't attest to the durability because mine have never left the stands they are on since 2018, but I've seen videos of ones that have led hard lives and they have stood up. Mine have been going for 4 years and never had a lick of problems. Left turned on for several days many times.

It's so cute!! Very light too...it's like carrying a little tackle box around.

Just had a chance to try a few presets and I am very impressed! Ordered Monday, just arrived at my door for only $397.65 CDN. For something that didn't cost a lot, it has certainly exceeded my expectations right out of the box. It sounds really good!

Can't wait to finish my play space now!

Yep, You'll get max bass like that. Tune to taste. I have mine on stands and it helps balance the highs and lows.

Enjoy!

I had read about that when doing my research. Thanks a lot for chiming in and confirming! I will get it up off the floor and experiment. :-)
