Foot switch question

So for those who have used this or the fc footswitches, I am trying to wrap my head on how it works, so according to the manual, the FM3 loads up at default settings I am on the preset layout so if I wanted to get to my scenes I would have to press and hold FS2 then use the other footswitches to select the scene layout. Is my understanding correct?

switches can have multiple functions, but can only do 1 or 2 things at a time (tap and hold functions).

by default, they are 3 Preset buttons. if you want a Scene switch, you can't press a Preset switch. so you can change to a different Layout, which turns the switches into different functions. like Scenes.

there are only 3 switches. but the 3 switches can do a ton of things if you change what they do at certain times.

if you don't want to do this, you can add more switches with an FC controller or other MIDI controller. the point is that the 3 on board switches don't just do 1 thing the entire time.

@chris I understand that. Perhaps I wasn’t clear on my question, I am more looking for a practical example based on default settings and the instructions in the menu if that makes sense.

the Default Layouts are examples. many people have trouble conceptualizing a switch doing multiple functions to begin with. so the examples were made to be very simple. this requires a few more presses along the way.

you can easily change the Default Layouts so that instead of going to the Master Layout Menu by holding switch 2, you instead jump straight to a Scenes Layout. or just put Scene switches on the same layout as your Preset switches.

Default Layouts are examples. but many people get stuck to them as the only way to do things. we had to give some sort of starting point, but it's just an example. definitely clear them out and arrange switches according to your needs.

not sure if that answered the question. i don't know what a "practical" example is between different people. but if you need faster access to Scenes, for example, just put a switch that changes to Scenes there directly.

Ok let me give you an example and you can tell me if I am wrong...because yes I am having a visualization issue. Let’s say for example I have the preset layout:

fs1 Tap select first preset in bank/hold bank up
FS2 Tap select second preset in bank/hold tuner
Fs3 Tap select third preset in bank/hold bank down

so if I set up like this I wouldn’t be able to get to any other layouts or am I misunderstanding?

correct. there are 3 switches with 2 functions each, and you've used them all up.

you can either turn the E knob to change to another Layout, add one or 2 simple external switches (like a Boss FS5U) and use them as Stand-In switches for any function you want - like Change Layout, or a direct function like Tuner. or change something in that example to allow you access to something else.

of course you could add an FC6 or FC12 as well, or any other midi controller for more physical switches.

That appears correct. However, you could use the middle button, for example, to access a different layout with a different set of functionality. Tuner likely not needed mid song, for example, so you could put it in another part of a different layout to access between songs

I'm assuming I could use a morningstar fc6 and (functionality wise) I could setup up those 6 switches exactly the same as the 3 on the FM3?

Well reading further in the manual gave an example of performance mode and further clarified how to use the foot switches intelligently so some misunderstandings on my part were cleared up. Thank you to everyone being patient with my stupid questions

Here is how I will set mine up:

Ext Sw1: Tap: Layout 1/Hold: Bank Up - (will rotate through banks being used)
Ext Sw2: Tap: Tempo/Hold: Tuner
Ext Sw3&4: Expression Pedal

Layout 1: (Presets)
FS1 Tap: Preset 1/Hold: Preset 4 - Tap or hold will also switch it to Layout 2 (so when I select a preset it will automatically switch to Layout 2)
FS2 Tap: Preset 2/Hold: Preset 5 - Tap or hold will also switch it to Layout 2
FS3 Tap: Preset 3/Hold: Preset 6 - Tap or hold will also switch it to Layout 2

Layout 2: (Scenes)
FS1 Tap: Toggle Scene 1 and 4 (4 will be my lead sound) - No holds since it would delay the action until the release of the FS
FS2 Tap: Toggle Scene 2 and 4
FS3 Tap: Toggle Scene 3 and 4

Not sure this will work, Randall d. That is, a tap function or hold function can only be tied to one action, I believe. So if you tap FS2, the unit will change to Preset 2, but I don't think it will ALSO change your layout to Layout 2. Perhaps I am mistaken..........?

It will work. Already doing this with the Axe III and FC6.
Cool. I just got my Axe III and FC6 about a month ago. I've got the FC6 switches set up to do tap/hold functions. Care to share how I would also set up a secondary function to those (like you plan to do with your layouts?). I would love to be able to select a preset and have the layout automatically change to the Effects 1 layout!
