Was reading in TGP and listened to a Rush gtr stem.
Since a lot of older records were mixed analog and eq etc. would be added manually on the desk during mixdown to 2-trk, these gtr stems floating around are really "re-creations" of what someone thinks the original mix was right?
I mean didn't most records get mixed by: multi-track tape -> desk (eq, compression, reverb, efx etc.) -> 2-trk tape.
They would *not* have printed the eq, compression and efx from the desk in a gtr stem?
And if you did get the original multi-track, you still need to re-create the 2-trk mix from yesteryear?
Made me think tone matching a stem is more about tone matching a recent re-mix vs. the original that everyone chases.
