Compressor running in the background?

Is it possible to run the compressor effect at all times in the background? I would like to free up a block in the signal chain for a different effect and I don't want to lose how the compressor effects my tone.
 
The compressor needs a block for it to function. How would run it the background without a block in the grid?

Do you have delay and reverb in series? Run them parallel to open up another block on the series grid line.
