Yes, 4 CM lets you use fx's such as overdrive, wah compressors in front of your amp and time based fx such as delay and reverb in the fx loop of your "real" amp and thus after the preamp. 4 CM also puts your "real" amps preamp in the loop of the Axe Fx, thus allowing you to use the "real" amps preamp or bypass it and use one of the amp sims from the Axe Fx as you preamp.
Check the manual and the wiki, is well described there. Also do a search on this forum, lots of posts regarding 4 CM.
