Cover band players: set up questions amps and effects…

I am constantly changing amps…(ocd) … I am curious what your set up looks like…
Today for me
1. Clean
2. Low gain and or what I call the AC/DC tone
3. Higher Gain (80’s)
4. Higher Gain dial different for 90’s

For clean I switch between Fender 5F8, Mesa uSA1 rhythm, or Morgan ac20
Low gain and high gain 80s are usually the same amp adding gain…either REV g1 or Brit 800, or a 1959slp Treble
90s I have been using Friedman or Rev G Purple 1

Waiting for the 2203 …lol…

With whatever effects are needed per song…

Extra credit…. I have been using kitchen sink preset….
Looking to use a layout 1 presets with a scene button per style of song…just curious

1. Clean
2. Low gain and or what I call the AC/DC tone
--1987x Jumped at different Master Volume and gain settings
3. Higher Gain (80’s)
--JMPre - OD1 or OD2 Bass Shift
4. Higher Gain dial different for 90’s
--Some variation on Recto Orange

1- ods clean
2- ods breakup (same channel with a drive)
3- crunch : HBE v1
4- distortion : HBE v1 (same channel but with modifiers)
5- full lead : scene 4 + drive and effect
6 - crunch lead (scene 3+ drive and effect)
7 - breakup lead (scene 2 with different drive)
8 - clean lead (scene 1 + drive and effect)

Same irs for all (60-61 gb and v30)except différents low cut and high cut on clean and breakup scenes.

4/5 hours shows with any style ever created lol.

I mostly use an AC20, it covers a TON of ground. I have a plexi scene as well for heavier. I gig one preset for almost 40 songs. Many thanks to Cooper Carter, from whom I copied this idea.

8 scenes, 4 amp channels, 4 cab channels. LOADS of effects available.

EDIT: I use a third-party cab IR for the plexi scenes. It's a 4x12 greenback with SM57 and R121 mixed. Not included here.

My "universal" main preset has 4 amps which I switch indipendently of scenes (I use scenes to just to switch effects):
Clean: Hiwatt
Edge of breakup: Morgan AC20 EF86 Treble
Crunch: Plexi 100W
High gain: Diezel VH4 Blue ch3

Then I also have a scene indipendent "boost" control switch which engages a drive block in front of the amp, a delay and a level block after the amp so that I can transform any scene/amp combo into a lead tone.

That's basically 8(scenes)x4(amps)x2(boost on/off)=64 combinations within a single preset.
And could also become 128 by using a second amp block

The 2203 high and a Nobels pedal… crush!…
Cover LG (AC/DC), 80s and 90s with small gain and input boost tweaks and the mids …
What. A great amp… I like the 2204 but this seems a “little” better…

The AC20 is amazing. And on my guitar simply adjusting volume knob can go from clean to hard rock. Need a drive or 2 for screaming leads but it can do it too

I have a kitchen sink preset with true stereo amps and matching dynacabs/dynacab irs via cablab4. I mostly use the deluxe reverb, AC30 TB, Bogner Blue, and Bogner Red for most gigs. For heavier bands I have a 5153 preset using a blend of the Broderick 103 C Off-X and the 103 CE IRs. I can cover any gig with just these two presets.

What varies between your stereo amps?

I ride the volume and also switch pickup positions on my guitar. It's an HH: position 1 is a 16kOhm humbucker, position 2 is 2.5kOhm (2 coils in parallel). So I can go from clean and spanky to very focused and heavy in an instant.

I use 3 main presets:
  • AC20 for any cleanish stuff
  • Dirty Shirley as my main rock preset
  • 5153 50W Blue for any higher gain stuff
Each preset has four main scenes:
  1. Rhythm
  2. Slightly Boosted (amp boost, I don't use drives)
  3. Dotted 8 delay on AC20 and Dirty Shirley, Clean amp on 5153 50W Blue
  4. Lead with delay
This covers 95% of what I play. I also have a few specialist presets with special effects but they all use one of these three amps.

I use one single cab block for all my presets and that provides enough similarity between presets that our sound tech has no issue.
Volume matching is also important.
I treat my main preset as a four channel amp. Clean, Rhythm, Crunch, Lead.
The clean channel is a Dumble ODS model, the other three channels are a Marshall Plexi model.
The models I use in the 14 presets I may use in a night are:
Dumble - Clean
Plexi - Many stages of Marshall tones
Friedman BE - More Marshal style tones
SLO 100 - Modern Hi Gain
Dumble/Two Rock mix - Blues/country
AC 30 - U2 and Queen specific presets

Are you using one preset and scenes or each is its own preset and scenes with in it

Each is its own presets and scenes within it. For a AC20 rhythm song, the lead sound is also using AC20 (with the amp boost on). I typically don't want a high gain lead sound for cleanish songs.

I have a layout with 4 scenes and 4 per preset buttons.

Scenes:

1 - 59 Bassman
2 - 2203 high gain (for my lower gain crunch)
3 - Brit Silver - heavier crunch
4 - Tucana Lead - solos

Then I have an RC Boost and a tube screamer for lead or boosty things. My top right button on most presets is a tap tempo and I have the delay mix on my expression pedal to bring it in when I need it. There is a button to get the the presets menu that gets to the tuner when I hold it and one kind of modulation depending on the gig.

I have another preset for country tunes that is based on the Mx 38 and another that has "song specific" scenes like for Mr. Brightside where I need specific delay and detune functions.

There are some cool tricks for making the most of switches. For example, a drive switch can be set to turn the drive block on and off with a press, and to cycle through channels with a hold. Or turn on and off one effects block with a press and a different effects block with a hold.

4 Main Sounds

1) Clean - No breakup for funk guitar, clean arpeggiated parts, Jazz, etc.
Usually Some kind of Fender Deluxe Reverb or Shiver Clean with a compressor. I will turn on the AT BB to go for an andy timmon's mid gain kind of thing as well. The Compressor pushing a drive pedal really helps with this.

2) Edge of Breakup / Crunch - Usually somewhere to cover Tom Petty, Blues, Stones etc. Cleans up with a volume knob, Bridge pickup gets some grit. Usually one of the Morgan AC20s or Vox / Matchless DC30. I'll add a klon drive to push the amp a little more if needed and a volume knob tweak gets me where I need it.

3) Rock Rhythm Guitar. This can cover pretty much everything from AC/DC to 80s/90s hard rock to Van Halen. A lot of volume knob work to cover different levels of gain. I use Justin Derrico's GOT rhythm sound for this with a couple EQ tweaks. Prior to his release, I was using the Shiva as well, just with the 1960TV Dyna Cab. I could probably do an entire gig (minus funk and jazz) with this tone. Occasionally I will use different Brit800 Variations going for a more Pete Thorn thing or the Brit Silver (bass on 10!) for a Joe Bonamassa thing or a Plexi with the Sonic Drive for a Mike Landau/Scott Henderson kind of thing (usually better with a strat, but I play mainly Les Paul Style guitars)

4) Metal(ish). I don't really use this scene too much unless I need to cover some Metallica, or modern/2000s rock (Anything from Creed to Paramore). The gain is more or less as much as scene 3, but the difference is the response of the amp, especially if there's palm muting or intricate riffing required. I use the JP2C Yellow, Presence shift on, or the Archean Bright or the 5153 Variations.

My lead sound is basically either Scene 1 with the Drive on for a low gain lead, or Scene 3 with a Tube screamer in front for a high gain shred thing.
